Has anyone with a chipped car tried to locate a stock spare chip at a junkyard? I know Wett owners don't have to worry, but I purchased TAP and just had the idea today. I wanted to see if anyone already did this. How sucessful were you and how much you pay?
Just figured if I can get one for cheap, it couldn't hurt to have a back up for when I go to the dealer! Your comments are appreciated.
Larry
98.5 TAPPED 1.8T

I am in the same boat now. Im looking throught the local yards to come up with a second computer to chip. I want to leave the one that came with the car stock and chip the second one. No luck so far.

I'm sure they exist, but they are rare. $20,000+ cars are hard to total! Another problem is that you will have to find a stupid junkyard owner in order to get a bargain on the ECU. Junkyards these days know what new parts cost! For a new ECU that will run $1200 new, they might mark it down to $800. But you can get it from Clair for around $1000, I think, new. The bargains in junkyards are reserved for the parts nobody wants due to low demand and excess supply.
There are some outfits that have advertised in the Quattro Club magazine as specializing in used parts. You might try one of them. Try the link below for a list of Audi parts vendors.
Dale

Audi Parts Vendors
