Hey everyone :)
I'm thinking of buying a '96 A4 2.8 Quattro. The car seems to be really nice but I have a few questions to ask the experts:
The car was originally from Quebec, and then I guess "Americanized" at approx 10,000 km, and the odometer/speedometer changed to miles (at least thats what the semi-clueless salesman told me)
So I guess what I want to know is if there were any differences between the US and Canadian versions of the A4 2.8Q... I was reading through the A4 Buyers Guide here on this site, and it mentioned that the car should have "Restraint System, Dual Front & Side Impact Air Bag" It doesnt have any badging to show side impact airbags in the seats... It also has an alarm sticker on it, and it does have the package that includes a remote key fob type thing... Im thinking those might be lost or something.
The car is absolutly beautiful. Great condition, 30k miles, and handles like a dream. A4s are kinda hard to get in my area since the local dealership is 40 miles away (but thats soon to change), so the guy is very hesitant to back off of his price of $24,995 (which I think is too much).
Any information and/or tips on getting the price down would be greatly appreciated. This is my first car that I've bought on my own, so it's all new to me, and I dont want to pay more than I should. Speaking of which, what would be a good price for this car? It's got pretty much all the options, leather, all weather, sunroof (and Im assuming remote locking despite the lack of keyfob), and the sport package (steering wheel and 17" tires)
Thanks everyone :)
~Tyler~
~Future A4 Owner~
I have loaded a 96 2.8QMS I purchase from an Audi Dealer last fall for $23K. It's been in the shop for miscellaneous problems roughly ever 2months ranging from the radio to the suspension to the engine burning over 1qt of Oil every 1K miles. To date all problems are unfixed. Luckily the car was under extended warranty. I can't wait to sell it this summer.
The '96 2.8 was a particularly problematic model of below average reliability with numerous known warranty issues. It was the A4 first model year so I assume there were many kinks to be worked out.
Good Luck and check the vehicles maintenance history.

i don't have details handy, but a lot of known hocus pocus with salvage cars coming out of quebec with new identities, etc.
even in ontario (quebec's neighbor) we are very wary of quebec cars. I would be even more so out of country.
check the history VERY carefully--right back to original owner, service records, do a search IN QUEBEC, look for salvage records, etc.

1996 a4 2.8 qm
