<br>My car is a 1.8tqMS; whenever I engage 1st or 2nd gear, I hear a noise that sounds like a bicycle chain being put under tension. The noise is very brief and it happens just when the clutch friction is enough to get the car moving. I don't hear it from inside the car when the windows are closed.<p>Another noise (which I hear only from inside of the car with windows closed) is a high-pitched "purring" when I have the engine at idle and up to 2000 rpm or so. The pitch increases with RPM. I don't hear it at higher engine speeds, probably because it is masked by the normal roar of the engine. <p>I've been hearing these things since day 1 and thought they might fade away as the car was broken in. Now I have 12.5K miles and the noises persist. Do I need to worry? <p><br>thanks all<br>-K.

Would the purring possibly be the fuel pump - from the rear of the car. If you get out of the car at idle, is it more noticeable from any particular area of the car?<p>Tom
