I noticed this first cold morning that the turbo makes quite a bit of noise until the car was warmed up. Is this a normal thing to hear ? I've never owned a turbo'd car before so don't know what to expect.

JT 12-23-1998, 10:01 AM Ash 12-23-1998, 10:42 AM It was about -13 Celcius (8 F) last night and this morning here in Toronto, and I had the same noises. One of which is definately the fan belt, and the second being the turbo....it seems to make more of a whistling sound now than before, at lower boost levels. When warmed up, it is barely perceptible even at full boost, but when it's cold, it's there for sure.
Incidentally, I had a weird noise coming out of the right side of the car ( I think). At about 2100 to 2400 rpm when the car was still very cold. Seemed like some kinda wheel bearing noise, or as if the brakes were lightly grinding against the rotors...(don't think this is it since it wasn't high pitched like a brake squeal). Anyone else experience this? It was gone once the car warmed up though...
Hate this cold....but thank GOD for those seat heaters....
-Ash Silver 98.5 1.8TQMS jfl 12-23-1998, 11:08 AM qt4lddht 12-23-1998, 11:10 AM DaveN 12-23-1998, 11:12 AM I've been getting a moaning noise, engine speed sensitive, close to the fan belt. I think it might be the fan clutch. It also goes away just a little of idle. Is that the noise you guys are getting? Ash 12-23-1998, 11:42 AM Hmmm, haven't heard that one....our cars sound like 80 year old geriatrics!
All kinds of noises emanating from them! :)
The fan belt noise that I got wasn't a moan, higher pitched than that...can't really describe it. But the other noise I got was only during driving, at about 2100 to 2400 rpm in all gears....more like a "woowoo" sound that sped up as my speed increased...transmission, driveline, who knows....
-Ash Silver (and Salty) 98.5 1.8TQMS DaveN 12-23-1998, 11:50 AM but between you and me not all the strange noises are the car, its been -12 here and I think a few of them are me:). T2 12-23-1998, 12:49 PM Kirk 12-24-1998, 12:32 AM A lot of times when I turn off my car, a 2.8 Tip, I get a really cool "spindown" noise which distinctly resembles an engine off of a 747 shutting down. It is really impressive and someone at Eagle Hardware asked me what I had under the hood one day. I told him I thought it was just a really cool $30,000 compressor or radiator fan...
It is thoroughly impressive though. I wonder exactly what it is, Obviously it is NOT a turbo (unless they snuck in the Bi-turbo engine when I wasn't looking)
Kirk
Bill W 12-24-1998, 07:12 AM Kirk, your spindown noise is the HVAC blower fan spinning down. Sounds cool, huh? If you turn your heater/AC completely off, you won't hear it when you turn your car's ignition off. |
