A friend has an 96 A4 2.8 Q that has a low speed clunk in the front end when turning and small bumps. We tryed replacing the shock/spring asm.,still there. you can literally walk along side of it rolling and hear it but we can'tfind it. Has anyone seen this problem and have some suggestions?

This is a VERY common occurence for 96 to 98 A4's. I believe they may have made a change in the bushing compound in 98.5 and later. The whole control arm will need to be replaced, as the bushing is an integral part. The problem is bad enough that my dealer recently had 18 on backorder! One of them being mine of course.
Mike

Northeast A4 Group

I think I have the same problem. Is the new control arm designed properly or will this be a recurring hassle and expense after 3 years.

I have heard from some that the rubber compound is different in the new parts. Others have said that the part is unchanged. I tend to believe the former. It is a big enough problem that you'd think they would change things, and those who say that have not are probably just eyeing the part and assuming there isn't a change.
Mike
