Hi Folks,
I checked the archives but didn't find anything.
Does anyone know if an OEM 8 disc changer will
fit in the factory location (inside a little
cubby in the trunk) of a 99.5 A4?
Or am I stuck having to get a 6 disc OEM to
for it? Also, has anyone else managed to put
another CD changer in there instead of the OEM
one?
Thanks.
-Alex

Alex,
I put the Panasonic CX-DP601 (or as you call it OEM) 6 CD changer into my 99.5 A4. The size of the Panasonic 8 CD changer is 9-1/8"W x 2-13/16"H x 6-11/16"D while the CX-DP601 6 CD changer is 9-7/16"W x 2-5/8"H x 6-9/16"D. I got this data from Crutchfield web site. It MAY fit, but when I put mine in it fit pretty snugly in there. I also wonder if the holes in the bracket will line up for the 8 disk changer. They are very cleverly designed in there and I don't think it would be easy to drill new ones. If you take your bracket out you'll see what I mean. I did not know about the size difference at the time I was getting my changer from Autotoys. Oh, well... Let us know if it fits! Good luck.
-- Yan
99.5 1.8TQMS VBlack/Onyx

See the following URL for step-by-step instructions for installing in the trunk under the deck.

http://members.home.net/chrisburke/reardeck_install.html

I found an archive last night dated April 3, 1999 by "John" after I searched for "mounting screws." He specifically claims that the 8 disk changer will NOT fit on 99s or 99.5s.
I was about to order the 6 disk changer from Autotoys and asked about the mounting screws as Clair sales those separately. I received an email back from Autotoys that said:
"Our changer does not fit in the factory mounting location, it comes with it's own brackets. You may be able to fit it in there, but we do not supply
provisions to do this."
Have you actually installed the 6 disk changer and, if so, how did you mount it?

Bob,
I have not even bought the 6 or 8 CD changer. I got a chance to see my car and will be picking it up this Saturday. The issue is whether or not I will upgrade the head unit. If I decide to change the head unit, then the changer will be a moot point since it will most likely require a different mounting point.
If I decide to keep the head unit, then I will most likely buy the changer that will fit in this location. From what you wrote, are you saying that Autotoys claimed the 6 disc changer will not fit in the 99.5 factory location?
Just a few more days before pickup! I am already thinking about the audio upgrade!
-Alex

I think I'm going to pop for the Clair unit instead of the Autotoys. I want the unit to fit in the designated shelf below the tool kit. According to some archives, the Clair unit WILL fit and the only issue is getting all the mounting screws in. "John" says he only got 2 in and I remember others saying they got 3 out of 4 in.
If anybody can correct this information or add to it please do!
(I'm going to post this again as a separate thread in case it gets lost in the noise.)
