Purchasing vehicle (new, factory order), from a dealer in Georgia, but I reside, and will register the car in another state. The dealer is asking what my home state's sales tax rate is, presumably to levy a sales tax when the sale takes place. This evening a fellow racquetballer says that sales tax will be collected by my home state when I register the car, and apply for plates.
As far as the dealer is concerned this will be a cash transaction, I have arranged my own financing and will have no lien holders on the title when I take possession.
Any one know the law on this one?
Many Thanks,
slack
Soon to be - 99.5 2.8m
So soon I cant sleep anymore, last night I had nightmares about my car coming off the boat all rusted out, and paint pealing.
you do pay the tax when you register it in your home state. And yo register a car, you are required to have a notorized certificate of origin, and a notorized receipt. The is no skimping on this one.
I got mine in PA, and registered it in NJ. Then paid the Sales tax (1750--- ouch!)
Either way, you have to pay Uncle Sam!

Sounds like what your dealer has planned. The dealers, if they collect the tax, are required to charge your home states tax rate. My dealer included all the fees: tax, title, and registration. They took care of all the dealings with the DMV and my tag was mailed to the dealership, who in turn mailed it to me. I never had to step foot in the DMV office.

I live in Pennsylvania and purchased my 2.8 in Ohio. The dealer in Ohio did not collect any tax period. I had 10 day to get PA plates, state inspection and pay the 6% PA state sales tax. Your state may operate the same way.
Roy M 98.5 2.8q Tip
