Dmak 10-23-1998, 07:32 PM You can get OEM winter mats from CLAIR..
Dmak 1.8TQMS
James Reedy 01-10-1999, 09:59 PM I noticed that it seems that many people here appear to think that the A4 is somehow unsafe at 100+ MPH speeds, I personally think that is a slightly uneducated argument to pose.
Think about it logically...the A4 has a rather strong standing in the European auto market...many of them are sold in Germany. I work with one German intern who says he's seen A4's on the highway doing over 120 MPH. This is proof that the car is safe at these speeds otherwise the car could not be sold in Germany where on certain stretches of the autobahn the vehicle should be capable of SAFE operation at speeds in excess of 100 MPH.
In Germany the conditions of the autobahn could be equally unpredictable as those of a US highway...they have wild life there too :) that might make its way onto the road and create an equally precarious situation as one might have here in the states.
The reason people here react so strongly is because most of you simply are not accustomed to the idea of driving at speeds of 100+ in Germany this would be considered normal...and dually considered safe.
I'm not trying to gloss things over here...it's obvious he was WAY outside the posted speed limit, but I think it's only fair to say in the defense of the A4..that it is by all means safe at such speeds..otherwise it would be unfit for service on German roads.
It's just my take...you're welcome to take it or leave it. If the man were in Montana I doubt many of you would post the same arguments against his speed as he'd have been within the law, but by no means in a safer situation than in NC. Lucas 01-10-1999, 10:18 PM Sorry i can not offer any advice, but here in Australia i lost my licence 8 times in my younger days.
Here if you go over 30kmh over the speed limit, you get a automatic licence suspension of 3 months.
As far as insurance goes, the only items that affect our insurance is drink driving.
If you have a accident and over alcohol limit no insurance!
If you get booked for a offence it does not affect your insurance unless you go to another company where they may quote you a higher premium.
How does traffic offences in USA alter your insurance? Just a insight wanted here.
I know the A4 is smooth at high speeds and it is easy to creep over the limit, but since i joined a club and now race at tracks, i find i generally drive within the speed limits on the road. I am itching for another spin and due to christmas break I haven't had a Fix for over a month, so hopefully wednesday week some friends and i will take a day of work and go to a track. This may be a idea for you in the future.
How did he exactly get you? ChuckH 01-10-1999, 11:59 PM ...I believe Corey was referring to the stability and handling of the A4, in which case, it is capable of much more. However, I agree that traveling those speeds on US highways is asking for trouble. Our roads, and other drivers are not a welcoming environment. I'm no granny driver either, and I have been known to speed, but 101 in a 55 is pretty wreckless, IMO. I would not have said that in my teenage years! ;-)
Charles
ChuckH 01-11-1999, 12:04 AM ...I not only wasn't there, but I can attest to improper operation of radar. I had a tropper recently try and tell me my 90Q 10V could acheive 63 MPH in 1/8 of a mile! I wish! :-) I still lost in court, but my fine was reduced. This is what the judge said: "Audi builds a fine automobile, and you might be surprised at how quickly they can gain speed." Obviously, he didn't know the difference between a highly modified S6 and my 90Q!
Charles Cameron 01-11-1999, 02:52 AM 1) Was the gun calibrated correctly?
2) When?
3) Has the officer been trained in the operation of a radar or laser gun?
(optional) Has the officer used the radar or laser gun issued to him successfully on the job?
While radar guns are not bulletproof in terms of reading, and are fooled by many things, your speed seems inconsistent with gross error from such a device... which tends to produce things in the 5mph and 170mph range in cases of gross error.
Cameron
Bill Shaffer 01-11-1999, 04:26 AM Tomasz A. Wojewoda 01-11-1999, 05:00 AM Dank 01-11-1999, 11:09 AM Deer don't know your speed when you are coming... Obviously a blown tire or an oncoming deer are bad at any speed, and obviously as speed increases your ability to avoid sudden obsticles gets reduced, but to say "100+ is not safe in an A4", as if it is any less safe than in any other car, or as if it is significantly MORE safe than 90-100, is just plain wrong. (damn run-on sentences...)
You mention that it is safer on a track, but why would a blown tire be easier to control on a track than on a road?
The sad thing with the state of driving these days is that most of us on this board probably drive safer at 100 than most of the American public drives at 55... Unfortunately, you can't quite argue that in court. Oh well. tHe uNaBiMmEr 01-11-1999, 12:16 PM My concern is with people who post statements to the effect of:
'A4 is safe at 100mph' and,
'dunlop sport 8000 are fine for winter driving in a Quattro'
many people read this as *a fact* and can get seriously screwed
by this missinformation or partial truth.
ChuckH 01-11-1999, 10:36 PM |
