Check out the latest European Car....They have an MTM modified 1.8 with 286hp and about 230lbs torque (going from memory...) Real close figures to the PES and they got 0-60 in 5.1! Fast! Not to mention they had a top speed of 166mph...very nice :) I can only imagine the PES is right there as it has similiar torque and HP figures. God, now I can't wait to get mine :)
Later!
A PES 30V with Tiptronic is not even as fast as my 97 1.8tqm with Wett 1.0 bar, K&N
air filter, glass pack (instead of resonator), and Remus muffler (about 215hp). I drove
one at the track in Pahrump, NV, and was a little disappointed. I just hope that it was
the Tip eating up all the power. (sorry Rick)
I don't mean to knock the PES kit, cause I drove a stock 30V Tip later the same day on
the track, and realized what a huge change it made to the car. I personally think the
kit is of great quality, but I prefer my 1.8T to it anyday.
Corey S

Corey's A4 Page

I'm not sure about the weight difference, isn't it about 200lbs? Then add a little for
the added weight of Tiptronic. But then you need to subtract a little cause Rick's
car is front drive, where mine is quattro.
I would guess that the supercharger kit adds no more than 50lbs, but again, I'm not sure.
Corey S
Wett 97 1.8tqm

Do you know anyone that had the stock resonator with an aftermarket muffler (such as Remus) take out the resonator (i.e. just ran a straight pipe with a Y connector to merger into the single muffler intake) and notice any performance gains or losses?
In other words, if I take out my stock resonator and keep my muffler, will I see a loss or gain in hp specially at low RPM's

I have driven 1.8T w/ chips and exhausts, and my PES 2.8 is WAY faster. Not even close... especially at speeds over 90 mph. That being said, I probably have the fastest combination for straight line performance with the fwd and 5-speed. In fact, I thought my 2.8 with the Wett chip and exhaust was faster than a lot of the chipped 1.8T's I've driven, if not equal. So, again, that TIP must REALLY be chewing up power!
Mike
I really, really wanna ride in or drive a manual PES 30V. I know the supercharger kit
is great and is supposed to produce a lot of extra power, but I just have a bad taste
in my mouth comparing Rick's 30V to my chipped 1.8T.
On the straight away at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Park in Pahrump, NV, I was
pulling about 94 - 95mph with Sharon (I'm guessing 130lbs all geared up) as a
passenger in Rick's car, where I was pulling 100 - 102mph with StanJ (I'm guessing
200lbs all geared up) as a passenger in my car.
Rick's car is a 98 2.8 Tip Front-Trak PES Brullen muffler, where mine is a 97 1.8T
quattro manual Wett 1.0 bar chip K&N glass pack Remus muffler.
Oh, and I disagree with your chipped 2.8 comment....I haven't found a 2.8 faster than
my car yet. My car is just baaaaaaaarely faster than a chipped 2.8 w/exhaust, but it
is faster.
Corey S

Well, Steve S has a Remus on his 12V 2.8, but the stock resonator is still in place. Good
sound, not too loud, not too quiet. Mike Shirley has a Remus on his 12V 2.8 with
the resonator removed. Very loud, sounds awesome, but too loud in my opinion.
Both of which are louder than my glass pack and Remus setup. Also, I don't know what
kind of power gains each of them got.
Corey S

...you'd agree that at least a chipped 2.8 and your modified 1.8T are close. Therefore, an extra 70hp *should* make one a whole lot faster than the other. Therefore, either the TIP is the problem or something else is up. I am telling you, my car is brutally fast compared to a 1.8T, so "something" is up (or down!) with Rick's car.
Mike

How did it perform compared to stock? Does it feel as if you lost some low end torque? Or vice versa?
I ahve a Remus right now and I like your glass pack idea to keep some of the back pressure.
So, is it just a Y couple to a single glasspack inlet?
Thanks in advance for the info

I remember Toni Ricci mentioned that they designed the PES with a catback exhaust in mind. When we were at Dick's Audi Shop here in Plesanton, Ca., Toni mentioned something like without the catback as in Rick's almost stock exhaust, the exhaust would be a limiting factor and he may be making like 250 hp. Or maybe his FWD is just slip sliding away and he needs quattro. Should measure his front tire depth after each race ;-)

...that a chipped 2.8 and my 1.8T are terribly close. In fact, so close that I can barely
overtake one on a straight away. They almost have to let off just a little to let me get
by. This is at high performance driving schools, of course.
Judging from the difference in power between Rick's car and the stock 30V tip I drove
later that day, I can see how your car is blowing away chipped 1.8T's. I have a hard
time believing that the Tip eats up so much power so as to make it slower than my
car. Perhaps there really is something wrong with his setup. True, he wasn't running
a full catback exhaust when I drove it, but that should only cutoff about 15 or 20hp I'd
think.
Corey S
P.S. Rick even had the Tip chip installed, fwiw.

I didn't notice any loss in low end torque, however, I did notice better throttle response.
I think it really helped the turbo get spooled up quicker. I did notice a significant
increase in torque in the mid-range, and the top-end was opened way up. Before
changing the exhaust, the power would die out at about 5700rpm, now I can carry it
all the way to about 6700rpm with a lot less power loss.
Remember, mine is the 1.8T, so I didn't need the Y couple, but that is what I'd recommend
for you, if you wanna go with the glass pack. Did I mention that my setup was quieter
than both the 2.8 setups I mentioned earlier?
Corey S

I forgot you had the 1.8T as the 2.8 almost has a true dual exhaust setup including twin cats. I think I the car will benefit also with the glass pack as opposed to the straight pipe so, I'll call the local muffler shop to build me one.
Thanks for your input.

After "hearing" Corey's setup I went ahead and used the same local muffler shop to install a replacement glasspack for my center resonator a few months ago. While I didn't feel a great difference in torque, I also noticed quicker spool-up times for my chipped 1.8T. So for $70, I got smoother throttle response and wee-bit more power.
-- Ron A.
Garrett 98.5 1.8TQM w/ stock rear muffler
