I have a Cobra base station modified to go up into the ham frequencies, added frequency slider, astatic (sp?) D104 mic, an 100 watt linear amplifier. Haven't turned it on since high school. It was a fun hobby that kind of fizzled.
I've never messed around in the ham frequencies though. Maybe just shout some skip every now and then.
Sometimes I'll have some fun with the truckers. I'll slide down in between channel 18 and 19 and ask for a radio check on upper side band.
...lurks a ham license, along with what used to be known as a "First Class Commercial Radiotelephone License" with "Ship's Radar Endorsement". No truth to the rumor that I was ever the Chief Radio Officer on the S.S. Exxon Valdez.
I still have a Collins 75A3 and a 51J4 somewhere in the house, and a Hammarlund
HQ-129X as the short wave receiver in the Barn. And they all work, dammit !
John
Trained Seals Racing
