Default Allroad owners who transport dogs please read!

Please be careful as you load/unload the dogs from the back of the car. I never imagined the problems we faced yesterday.

I was leaving home yesterday to run some errands and offered to take the dog as he loves to go for rides in the car. he got excited, and was bounding all over waiting to get in. When I opened the rear lift gate he went to jump in. In his excitement he didn't jump far enough and his right front paw landed on the spot where the door latches. in that spot there is a piece of Aluminum trim held up by a spring. His paw hit that spot and got wedged in between the 2 pieces of aluminum. they are both sharp and cut his toe VERY deep. The dog was bleeding all over, and couldn't get free. I had to essentially rip his toe free an awful experience.

I raced him to the vet (nearby luckily). Unfortunately he has been there ever since. He had to have emergency surgery yesterday afternoon to have that toe amputated. That is much to high a price to pay for an accident when loading in the car.

We should be able to pick up the pooch around noon today. Depending on how he is doing I'll post a picture of the bandaged mutt. For everyone's sake I'll skip posting the picture of the bloody latch on the back of the car.

Wish your dogs well, give them an extra scratch behind the ear, and be careful when they get in and out of the car!

Default Awful! Sorry gragravar

Hopefully a freak accident never to be repeated but I will pay more attention to that 'hole'. I'm sorry for your dog's pain and suffering. I hope it doesn't forever turn him off from the car.

And those of us with a 3rd seat need to remember that there are other 'paws' that climb back there:

Default See my old post about the bath mat mod

The area on top of the bumper where your dog got hurt is very slippery. There are many dog lovers in the allroad crowd so our thoughts are with you.

https://forums.audiworld.com/allroad/msgs/75212.phtml</a

Default Good Point! watch those kids fingers/toes too.

I know the pup will appreciate the well wishes. I do hope he is not turned off from riding in the car, as he used to love it so much.

Default I saw that before and spent most of last evening kicking myself for not doing that.

I think a stop to pick up a bathmat on the way to pick up the dog is certainly in order! Thanks again for the support and the advice.

Default Wow, sorry to hear that. I load my Airedale that way all the time, and never even thought about the

potential there. Looks harmless enough, but wow.

Hope your guy gets better soon. The nice thing is dogs seem to shrug these things off pretty well once healed. Give him some treats and let him heal, poor guy.

Default I'm so sorry to hear about the dog.. you would think that ...

AoA and VWoA would change this. I noticed the same latch on the Golf/GTI hatchbacks. I would assume its on all the Avants too..
