roof storage options
Need a few more cubic feet for weekend travel for my family of four. Not really for skis or boards, but really just for clothes, shoes and pool toys. A search of the archives here indicated a lot of support for both Yakima boxes and Thule boxes, but I didn't notice any allroad users posting. Anyone on this board have experience with either on an allroad? What do I need to buy besides the box itself? The Yakima website indicates nothing at the current time for the allroad, but I know some of you posted in the past about your set-up. What are we talking price-wise for the box and any necessary mounting accessories? Are these pretty stable and quiet at 75/80 mph? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Re: roof storage options
On thule boxs, you'll need a crossbar set like the 751 to go with the box. these clamp to the existing rails on the car and are lockable, then you can bolt other carriers on the bars as needed. boxes, ski, bike, board racks what have you. I have a summit box for skis, but they have other boxes that are more geared for just "stuff". the one advantage to the ski style box is it is long and narrow so you can mount other racks beside it if you have that need (where the utility boxes are close to the width of the rack so they are about all you can put on it).
Thule usa site link below, they also have a internactive car/model screen on the site so you can see what the options are.

Yakima Doublecross, crossbars and Space Case

I have been using this setup since November whenever I need more gear space (like next week). The fit is fine and cleanly misses the rear door while supplying an extra 20 cu ft of cargo space. I have had it over a 100 mph full of gear with no problem. Yakima lists allroad in their printed fit list (but not their web site)with 48 inch crossbars. I use 58 inch bars to allow more gear (bikes). There have been a number of posts on this forum about racks and the Yakimas are very quiet at speed. Quite a few allroad drivers are using the doublecross towers.
