Headunit Replacement

Just completed replacing the Symphony II headunit of my 2002 Allroad. I bypassed the Bose amp as well, replacing it with a 4 channel Alpine, and and Kenwood mono which I salvaged from my other vehicles.

Wow, where did you find perfectly matching wood?
Not a bad install for an aftermarket unit. I wonder if you could fit two DIN units in there... one additional unit with a DVD player and fold out screen.

Re: Wow, where did you find perfectly matching wood?
I got lucky - ordered from Exoticwooddash.com without seeing it first. The match was better than expected. If anyone is interested I have another 11"x8" piece.... I got two in case I screwed up the first one.

So, this sounds better?
Same speakers? Just curious...I don't know much about car audio...but this doesn't look very high end (although looks can be very deceiving, I realize)...but this is an improvement over the stock Symphony II? Seriously...I'm not trying to be a dick...just curious...

Infinitely
Infinitely. BTW - I did replace the speakers with MB Quartz PSD213's, and a JL Audio subwoofer. I have had nothing but great performance from Alpine products - especially head units. The stock Symphony with Bose absolutely sucks (not trying to be a dick either). The distortion at even moderately high output levels was unbearable. The stock Bose sub is (was) practically worthless.
As noted in a previous post - the stock speakers did not include a crossover, resulting in very mediocre performance from the mid-bass speakers and the tweeters.
I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and workmanship of the Allroad, but find it unbelievable that it included, at a premium price, a seriously under-performing audio system.

Pic coming - but not too high tech
I have a JL Audio subwoofer enclosed in a half tube. Not very technical, but I just threw it in the back. It adheres to the carpeting via velcro on the unit. I have had the same setup in another vehicle, and it allows me to move it or remove it when I load up "stuff". After reading several posts in the Audio Forum, I was a bit concerned about placing it in/next to body panels. Some folks have had issues.
In addition - it took me forever to fabricate a faceplate. My wife would kick me out the door if I embarked on another 'forever'.

HAHAHAHAH
True about the body panels and noises etc.. Was just wondering what you did as some put a large box and then it removes the effective "stuff" capacity.. A small tube, I ran tubes in a few cars, prior to building custom boxes and they can be made to sound nice, depending on what your looking for.
Like the MBQuart speakers as well, did you listen to the Bostons as well (generally a little softer)..
Glad the wood matched so well, also thanks for the URL, will have to investigate if I decide to tear into the system..
Tell the wife to give you a few minutes to take pics for your internet peeps (hehehe: ))
