Thanks for all the groundbreaking, Paul. Hopefully this will be a useful addition to the Audipages procedure, after we polish it up a little.

Default From some correspondence I had with PaulW and Wendy...

Paul,

I did get all the parts in for the timing belt service. I ended up adding 4 items to your original part list:

2x - 026103085D Camshaft cover oil seals

1x - 4D0807300 Body Pin

1x - N 905 428 01Harmonic Balancer Bolt

I went by the procedure list you've sent me before.

Talk to you soon,

escapA8

Wendy,

I would like to order parts listed below for my 1997 Audi A8 3.7 FWD (Front Wheel Drive).

According to Paul this is a complete list of parts for a timing belt replacement on an Audi A8 4.2 Quattro. He is pretty sure these parts will also fit my car, but suggested to check with you if this list also applies to my car.

Please give me a call at your convenience so you can quote me your most recent prices and I can place an order.

I am looking forward talking to you.

Thank you.
escapA8

Default I would definitely get the serpentine belt. Here is mine after the TB job.

Default The body pin is for the electric fan install, not needed if you do the bumper removal....

I would definately do the serpentine belt, but I would think twice about the front main crank oil seal. I bought (and still have) a replacement seal. I decided that upon inspection the original seal looked 100%, and past experience has taught me that removing and replacing these can cause more problems than it solves (easy to scratch or otherwise damage the sealing surfaces, at which point you are doomed). If your front main isn't leaking, I wouldn't replace it.

Default I've since talked to a friend who's an Audi mechanic,

and he says the same thing, that he wouldn't do the crank seal unless it was showing signs of leakage. He said he just doesn't see that as a common problem at all.

Default Here's the front end removal procedure

Do this first, then pick up the TB procedure.

Front End Removal Procedure

Default Thanks! And a follow up question.

If you owned my car, were going to own it for a while, and if you were about to open it up to do a TB, would you do a pre-emptive replacement of the oil cooler connections (plastic pipes and O-rings)?

Default Yes, I would, here's the procedure

Takes 1.5 hours once the front end is off and you've got the TB covers off. All you do is unbolt it and bolt it back up (too bad it's not that easy, but almost).

http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/enginemechanical/oilcoolerremovalreinstall.html</a
