Small Trunk—Don’t think so...
...I seem to recall early on there were some nay-sayers bemoaning/criticizing the lack of space in the D5’s boot/trunk...Oh my, it’s too narrow compared with the D4, or some such horror alert. Well, it’s true that the D5 is a tad narrower, but the trunk is certainly deeper versus either pre/post face lift D4. How the D5’s trunk storage stacks up (in real life) against the S-Class or 7-Series, I haven’t a clue, but its got Plenty of useable space, as evidenced by this morning’s landscape nursery, supermarket, and specialty produce store visits. Could have loaded more in there, but couldn’t risk damage to the wife’s lavender plants (the other 5 bags of groceries enjoyed the trip in the rear cabin).

Derf,
I have no experience with your D5 but I can speak to a previous car that we both concurrently owned, the 2011 D4 A8. The trunk was so narrow and short that it was the primary (and truly only) complaint I had about a car that I otherwise enjoyed immensely. Now YMMV and to each his/her own, but to load two golf carry bags, I had to jimmy the base into the netted left hand storage space and even still had to carefully bend my driver to avoid breaking the shaft. I was constantly frustrated that, for a flagship model, the trunk space was so compromised and narrowed by all the electronics that were stuffed into the sidewalls. And you say the D5 is more narrow??
Here Wilson the Airedale is questioning "Twosome? But I thought we were a threesome!"

useable but smaller... I found values of: Mercedes S: 16.3 cu ft; BMW 7: 14.8 cu ft; Audi A8 D5: 12.5 cu ft; Audi A8 D4: 14.2 cu ft. So D5 smaller than D4 and the competition. Small glovebox and center console volumes are also a shortcoming for the A8. Of course there aren't many shortcomings to the A8 and so many superlative features that intelligent buyers like us have chosen the A8.
Side note: my 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis: 20.6 cu ft.....able to store at least three bodies in the huge trunk.
