Another update..

Had the car booked in at yet another VAG specialist for 2 hours to perform another more comprehensive compression test and a leak down test on any cylinders with low compression.

Turns out they didn't have the correct fittings or whatever to perform the leak-down test so rather than charge me for the compression test of what I already know the results they didn't bother doing anything, we did however spend around 30 mins chatting about what the next steps might be.

They asked for some logs so they could see what I was telling them, Low actual boost v requested boost and difference in turbo speed between bank1 and bank 2.

We then talked about spending time and money on removing the engine and diagnosing the fault and possible repair of whatever is wrong, head gasket, valves or rings etc or to replace the engine with another from a crashed car.

They charge 99GBP per hour on labour, any ideas on how long and engine swap should take?

Only components I would be looking at the swap over would be the turbos as I know these to be good and maybe fit a new thermostat.

Thanks to anyone who inputs...

its around 16 hours. im not sure where the 42 hour figure came from.. ive done it myself twice myself before and once at a garage. total working time is around 16 - 20 hours. its quite a simple process and the gearbox does not need to be dropped from the car for it to be done. last time i took it to a garage for the chain to be done, i was charged 1200eur (without parts) he was done in 4 days.

did you test your turbo actuator using VCDS as we discussed before?

UPDATE: i saw just now that my PM was never sent to you and i didnt realise this, sorry i didnt reply. i have responded now

That's book time for an engine replacement, doesn't mean it will actually take that long. However I would be interested to see how long it actually takes you....

I wish I had the facility to do it and see for myself how long it would take, I had my car booked in for walnut blasting and they quoted me 7-8 hours for the work, I can whip my intake manifold and swirl flaps off in under 30 mins, literally 10 mins on each cylinder doing the blasting, saved a right packet doing it myself and can also vouch for the standard to what it was completed to.

Looks like I'll be forking out for the engine work though

Do you have any carbon or oil residue coming out of the weep-hole in the block for the affected cylinder?
It is for the injector seal bypass. See photo of it on 3.0TDI

I assume 4.2tdi is the same as they are the same injectors/seals/clamps.

no my engine is pretty clean around there, I’ve only had cylinder 5 injector out and swapped it with a recon unit a few months ago just to see if there was any improvement, this was before I had the compression test results which show that cylinder is almost 50% down on compression.

Just updating...

Currently thinking I have head gasket failure on bank 2, leaking compression between cylinders 5 and 6, looking into garages which might be able to take on the work and whether or not they are reputable too.

Not many options at all..
