To Recall or Not Recall
My 2017 A8L 4.0 now has just 26k on the clock. I'm due for an oil change right now and I initially thought I'd just get the recall and turbo inspection done since the fix has finally been announced. Then I started thinking about it and am wondering if I should wait it out for another few years and do it right before the end of the turbo warranty period or just see if they fail before. The car is obviously not a daily driver and is bone stock. I'm just curious as to group opinions here. Now or later?

(Wow my first post here since years.)
I received my recall info in the mail yesterday (Mon, 8 Aug 2022) and scheduled an appointment minutes later. Hopefully you'll get yours in the mail soon as well.

escap... That's not what he asked.
.
DBD, I'd be concerned that when the turbos fail, maybe there could be some collateral damage or the possibility of getting stranded or in an accident.
.
I myself will wait a few months until they are hopefully all up to speed on the recall procedure and have worked out any callback-type bugs.

I agree with the above. The fear of being stranded on the side of the road made my decision easy...get it fixed now.

Both recall communications (1 Announcement of the issue 2. Request to schedule the repairs with your dealer) mention "may result in a crash" so I'm getting it done ASAP. The dealers do know now what procedures to follow and what parts need to be replaced. Plus, it'll get you a free oil change, right?

Scheduled mine for 16th. Going to pay $450 extra to have pcv replaced while they are there. Saves me the bill if it goes bad and more than likely I'd be td1 since I am tuned and wouldn't qualify for free repair from warranty.

Fix now, give or take one oil change cycle timing max.
1. Boards like this probably over amplify the issue like 100x to the outside world. A guess is the actual failure rate is a few percent per year total. As one of the earliest suggesters promoting constant reporting of the issue to NTHSA as a safety issue, that tactic proved out. But it doesn't mean all are destined to it. Drive it around several more years and likely still wouldn't break. BUT, it would put incremental wear on motor that now has to be dealt with strictly out of your wallet.
2. I continue to think the oil quality exacerbates the issue. US dealers routinely poured 502/505 into these, the specs all still say that, etc. Yet in Europe they got 504, which is a demonstrably better oil spec in general. Unless/until most owners get to 504--which they probably won't with this generation of A8/S8--the extra wear and gunk risks and all continue. Meantime keep pouring 502 in there with the old too small screen mesh, and not good. Will be interesting to hear what they pour in for this complimentary fill too. If it is 502, they cheaped out again, for like $10 overall. Better action would be 504, AND change the underhood sticker to match, and print a manual supplement page. None of that oil spec stuff is anywhere in the recall scope though.
I got my letter in last few days about it. Not the clearest, but I infer the parts are available now. But, since I changed my oil and filter again within the past two weeks at the 5K interval with 504 spec--which I have been using for any post-AudiCare change--I'm inclined to get my 5K or so have out of it. That is, instead of like 300 miles where I am right now. . My sense is when the screens get pulled on mine, they will be a lot cleaner than a 4.0T fed only 502 spec for its life. If I find they poured 502 into it, it gets changed again to 504 at 5K. Then with right screens and 504, I get back to 7.5K or greater interval when I do them on my own dime and personal labor.

Thanks to all for the replies. I called Aud of Columbus this morning to schedule the repair. They haven't even been allocated the parts yet and have no idea when that's going to happen. So, it's an oil change now and the fix at the next service interval.
