In my old D3, there was a Directory where you could input contacts that were stored in the car and not tied to a particular phone. I didn't see that this is still available on my new D4 - is this no longer a feature? Thx.

Yes, there is. You mark the contact public.

Found it, thanks. Is there a way to keep the Public Directory entries separate from the phone entries? I have about 1000 contacts on my phone which I don't need to download; there are just a handful of favorites or "public" entries I want access to. What is the best approach for that? Thx.

That's something you would handle on the phone itself. If you don't want your phone contacts to be synced to the MMI, then you have to go into the phone's Bluetooth settings and turn off Contact syncing or limit it to only select groups.

Here's what that looks like on an iPhone.
