Default DIY: Retrofit Autohold on NA D4

Hi guys,

Just want to share my recent experience with retrofitting Autohold on the D4 in case someone else is as well interested in this project.

BACKGROUND:
As always, Audi removed certain features from the US model. Autohold is one of them. It came standard on the D4 in other markets such as Germany, UK, and China. Luckily it is relatively easy to retrofit, and the overall cost is affordable. Many people have done the similar project on B8 A4/Q5, C7 A6/A7, as well as Q7 4M. However, it didn't seem like anyone had done it on the D4 and there was not much information available on the internet. So perhaps this is the very first ever DIY to retrofit Autohold on the D4.

PARTS NEEDED:
1x E-Brake/Autohold switch --- 4H1 927 225 B (around $50 shipped from Europe)

1x repair wire 000 979 131 (To connect ABS unit)

2x repair wire 000 979 009 E (To connect the switch)

1x mini fuse tap adapter

1x 5A mini fuse

Some sorts of soldering kit

Extension wire ---- 0.5mm or 1mm thickness, around 15m total length

VCDS for coding

PROCEDURE:

1. Install the new switch

1) Remove the driver side knee panel and the center console:
I followed these videos. Very straightforward.

2) Unplug the connector to the E-brake switch

3) Remove the old switch:
There are 3 clips that hold the switch in place (1 left, 1 right and 1 front). Insert a small screwdriver under the clip and lift it up to release. Then push the switch up through the top to remove it from the center console.

4) Install the new switch

2. Wiring
There are 3 wires to install. 2 wires connect the switch to the ABS unit, and 1 wire runs from the switch to fuse box in the trunk.

1) You need to cut the 3 wires (2x 000 979 009 E, 1x 000 979 131) in half. Then use your soldering kit to connect 1x 000 979 009 E head to 1x 000 979 131 head and extend the wire to approximately 3m long. Then follow the same steps and make another exact same wire. These 2 wires go from the switch to ABS unit.

2) Use another new 000 979 009E head, extend it to approximately 7m long. Connect the mini fuse adapter to the other end. This wire goes from the switch to fuse box in the trunk.

3) Open the switch connecter cover. Insert a small screwdriver to lift the tab then slide the inside plug insert out. (See picture)

4) All 3x 000 979 009E heads go to this plug.
- Pin 12 goes to Pin 30 of ABS unit
- Pin 10 goes to Pin 34 of ABS unit
- Pin 11 goes to fuse 10 in carrier 1, holder F

5) Now you need to run wire through the firewall to ABS unit in the engine compartment. I followed the method described in this forum. https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...ewall-2903846/

6) Connect wires to ABS unit.
a) Now this is the most difficult part of this project. On the D4 the ABS unit hides under the plenum chamber cover on the passenger side. The space is extremely tight with limited visibility. If you have small hands like mine, you might be able to reach the ABS unit without removing the cover. Otherwise you have to remove the plenum chamber cover.

b) Follow these steps described in the manual.

c) Once you can reach the ABS unit, you need to remove the plug. There is a clip on the top that can be pulled out UPWARDS.

d) Then you need to remove the back cover of the plug.

e) Locate Pin 30 and 34 on the plug based on this picture.

f) There is purple lock that you need to open in order to insert new wires. Use a small screwdriver to slide it upwards.

g) In the back there are white bungs blocking the holes. You can use a needle and insert from the front to push the white bungs out.

h) Once the holes are cleared, insert the 2x 000 979 131 heads into the plug. Again, Pin 12 of the switch goes to Pin 30 of ABS unit, and Pin 10 of the switch goes to Pin 34 of ABS unit.

i) Once everything is done, reinstall the back cover and reconnect the plug to ABS unit.

7) Run the last wire (the one with mini fuse adapter) to the rear fuse box. There are several ways to reach the trunk compartment. I personally ran the wire through the center armrest storage box.
a) To do this, first you need to pull out the back cover in the trunk. There are two clips on the top. Pull on the cover with force and it will come out.

b) Then remove the trim on top of the storage box. Once it’s off you will see a hole to the trunk where you can run your wire through.

c) Insert the fuse adapter to fuse 10 in carrier 1. Carrier 1 is A column on the left and fuse 10 is the 10th fuse counting from top to bottom. There is already a fuse in this spot. All you need to do is remove it and insert it into the bottom spot on your fuse adapter. Then insert a new 5A mini fuse into the top spot of the adapter, then insert the adapter to the car’s fuse carrier.

3. Coding:

1) In VCDS, go to [03- ABS Brakes] and clear all fault codes.

2) Select [Security Access - 16]

3) Enter security code S11820

4) Select [Coding – 07], then [Long coding helper]

5) Select Byte 8, in Binary change it to 11100011. (Your original coding for Byte 8 should be E2 (Binary 11100010), this change should give you a new coding of E3)

6) Exit the Long coding helper and click [Do it] and you are done!!!
