Considering buying a '14 A8L TDI
Currently drive an '07 A6 Avant with 212k mi. Looking at an A8 with with 41k mi and all the trimmings. My concerns are mostly related to cost of ownership. I'm not sure how much higher than my current costs it would be. Anybody have any thoughts or care to shaer their long term ownership exp?
edit: After reading a number of other threads of a similar vein I'm leaning towards not buying it. Seem like air suspension issues are prevalent and that despite the deal I am getting it may be too much longer term maintenance cost to risk it.

I was also a previous C6 2.7t owner, loved it. I recently purchased a 2014 A8L TDI with 34K mi on it to replace my 2007 A8. Once you drive an A8, no going back to an A6. The TDI is hands down the nicest car I have owned in terms of a luxury road car. And it gets such great mileage. I can appreciate your trepidation when it comes to certain costs specific to maintaining the A8. Really the only thing that is significantly more expensive is the air suspension, the rest of it is just marginally more expensive. If you are ok with aftermarket remanufactured parts you can cut the parts cost in half or more when it comes time to repair the system. On the 07 I had to replace one front strut at 96K miles and a couple of fuel pumps at 80K and that was about it. I expect the TDI being a newer improved model and a tdi to fare even better. A8 certainly not for everybody as it does cost more to drive than a C6. Registration, insurance and maint/repairs all likely to be higher.

I concur with 1stGoat. I have had a 2012 and 2016 A7 and loved both of them. I now have a 2014 A8L and it is on a completely different level. I got an aftermarket warranty through my bank but so far haven't noticed a significant increase in terms of maintenance costs. My insurance increased but not by much. I had similar concerns when i was looking but glad I made the decision to get the A8.

I agree. Once you move up to an A8L, there's no going back.
I have a 2012 A8L 4.2 liter, and I love the car. It's definitely a different level of luxury.
Considering I drive a lot for my business and visiting family, this car has made the long trips much more tolerable.
Regarding the operation costs, it definitely makes me cringe when something goes wrong.
I recently had to have a carbon cleaning and valve cover gaskets replaced at 165K miles.
The mechanic gave me a loaner, 2012 VW Passat. After three days, I quickly came to realize that it sucked and I wanted my A8 back.

When I bought the D4, I went and test drove an S Class and a 7 Series as I already had a D3 A8L so I thought Id switch it up a little bit. To me, both the S Class and the 7 Series felt like didnt have the comfort, luxury, and the sportiness the A8L has. I even had my brother which he is a huge BMW fan and he said the same thing. They Also felt so much bulkier and boatty than the A8. Anyhow, I just sold the D4 and am also looking to buy a Diesel one as theyll be gone and I gotta have one of those. I am having hard time finding a fully loaded and I mean down to the single least important feature- I got to have it. In meantime I am enjoying the D3. 👍🏿
Warning: just like everyone has mentioned here, there is no going back to another car or you will end up in an undiagnosed crisis and will go crazy lol. The A6 feels like an A4 to me and the A4 GOD i used to love them in my college days but now I get claustrophobic in them.
So the only negative thing is you cant go to a small car down the road.
