Aluminum mirror housings were the original calling card for Audi S models. Audi has added Carbon optics and Black optics as options, and they have now diluted the aluminum visual S model cue.
That's because the visual cue of aluminum mirrors didn't resonate, or matter to the general car buyer. Its easily copied by other brands as well, making it less important in S and RS model branding. The S8 has always been about subtle visual cues. Plus, everything can be copied. As one poster stated, his white S8 has black colored mirror housings and he looked across a parking lot and saw a white Toyota Camry with black mirrors housings.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I guess that is why Audi offers aluminum, carbon fiber or black mirror housings as options.
Alrighty, I know I am opening myself up to some criticism but here goes anyway. Since I have owned my car (for more than a couple of years) I have wanted to change the S8 emblem on the trunk lid. Mine is not a S8, it is a S8 Plus. Now it even has the APR Stage One tune (S8 Plus +). LOL.
