Amazing Fuel Economy/Range

Amazing Fuel Economy/Range
1. I'm coming up on 2500 miles. I haven't had my fifth refill yet. Even with all the holiday and "testing out the new car" driving I've done, I'm going almost 2 weeks without stopping for gas!
2. I know everybody hates it, but the auto start/stop truly helps. If there's no traffic, my daily commute is around 35 minutes, mostly Interstate speeds, but a decent number of major traffic intersections with 6 or 8-way traffic lights, 80 minutes outside of rush hour, and about 2 hours during the morning rush. In my A6 4.2, I was refilling every 3-4 days. The AS/S savings doesn't show up in MPG measurements, but it's very real. I'm $200+ ahead of budget on my monthly fuel purchases with the A8.
3. The adaptive cruise control makes it so much easier to use it all the time. I suspect it's the other big contributor to my huge fuel savings. Maybe I'm a lead foot and hadn't realized how bad I am.
4. My range may drop as summer comes in, but I suspect I can touch a 600 mile per tank range during a cold spell.

Based on fillup calculations (at the pump I take the # of gallons to fill / miles since last fill up), my first tank was 17 MPG. My second-to-last was 28.9). Overall average is 24 MPG.
On my last car, I would get as low as 13 MPG during a commute week, but as high as 26 MPG on a long trip.
I always have the climate set to 74 degrees with AC enabled.
I do spend a good bit of time stuck in traffic or stopped at traffic signals. The rest, however, tends to be highway driving speeds. It has been quite cool around here (so more demand for heat than AC). While I "drove it like I stole it" for the first tank or so, I've been trying to use the adaptive cruise control and the auto start/stop as much as possible. The in-car MPG gauge is often slightly over 30 MPG. Range gauge generally shows 550 just after a fill-up. I don't believe I've seen it higher, but it also tends to stay put at 550 for a rather long time.

I'd love to see that type of range. In my S8 I've seen 17.6 MPG over the long haul, with my city driving averaging around 12. I haven't taken it on a good highway stretch in a little while though. Will have to take it on a long road trip soon and report back what the hwy cruise range is.
Right now I see 345-400 miles per tank.

My range computer says 580-600 most of the time, and like yours sits in the 530-550 range for what seems like forever.
For what it's worth, I always refill at 1/2 tank.
It keeps the fuel mix fresher and always keeps my range high.
Maybe I'm old fashioned but have never let any vehicle go below 1/4 tank and only once in my life got an idiot light - on a rental - for low fuel.

17mpg in town, 26-28mpg rural
I have the advantage of living only a few miles from open country. My urban, suburban miles are limited. On the open road I average 26-28mpg. On non-freeways, blue highways though the Dakotas and western provinces, I have hit as high as 30mpg. That's driving in the 50s enjoying the sights.
The 2012 A8 appears to produce about 2mpg better overall mileage than my 2006 A8. In addition, when really highballing it, the 2012 seems to produce considerably better mileage than the 2006.
