4.0TT Turbo Failure Thread - S6 S7 RS7 A8 S8

In my opinion, nobody knows for sure, and people are just speculating. The rumor is that Audi implemented a production change sometime around April 2017, and those cars should have the revised oil screen and check valve. I believe that is also the reason why the TSB has a VIN split for the 2017, meaning only some 2017's are supposedly affected. If you live in a CARB state, the turbos are covered by Audi through 7yr/70k as part of the emissions warranty and according to my dealer there is also an extended 10yr/100k warranty on the PCV.

The dealer replaced my noisy/failed PCV under warranty (2014 S8 52K miles). I paid them $450 to replace the turbo oil screen and check valve with the updated parts while they had everything apart to replace the PCV. $450 well spent IMO, even if it was to fix a design issue.

Hi, all.
I'm considering a 214-2016 S6 with this engine and I've read this thread and the one on another forum. I would like to know what's the current consensus on a sustainable, long-term solution. I'm planning on keeping whatever car I get for a while. Knowing me, I'll probably tune it at least Stage 1.
Is it remove the filter? Latest OEM filter? Use an aftermarket filter and change it frequently?
Thanks in advance.

Not much consensus, many opinions. You should be able to form your own if you have done all that reading
Call it a "screen" or "filter screen".
Fwiw, most would say one or more of those approaches you mentioned are workable.

I’m leaning to removing it altogether to eliminate cleaning it as a maintenance item.
Yeah, “screen”, not “filter”. My bad.

I don’t think I would say tuning is the #1 reason for turbo failure lol. But I’ve definitely seen them come in tuned and blown and the screen is clean.
Also I want to clear up that the A8 and S8 share the same turbos, only the compressor wheel is different. The compressor housings are also the same just machined differently for the larger inducer.

Consider that if it has different wheels/inducers (larger), then the load on the bearing would be different, also.
Have the tuned cars with blown turbos been mostly A8/S8? Stock or upgraded? Other 4.0TT cars? Can you add to what you have said?

Hmm, that’s very good food for thought. My personal sample size is too small to really make that kind of an assumption. It was mostly S8s but also that’s mostly what got tuned. There’s a lot at play when a compressor gets changed even when everything else stays the same. I’m going to do some reading and see what can be ascertained

I asked them to keep all the parts that were removed for me and the $#%@^ dealer tech threw them away. I was tempted to not pay them as they couldn't prove to me the parts were replaced. I made a pretty big stink........
