4.0TT Turbo Failure Thread - S6 S7 RS7 A8 S8

The S8 is a completely different car. A have the 13 S8 and I'm still in love with it. I have 86k on mine, APR stage 1 & 2. Blew a turbo around 78k, placed new SRM +4mm turbos. I still drive it hard everyday. I'd get the S8, drive it till it starts to burn oil, then replace turbos with SRM.

The 2017 4.0T models are listed as needing to be updated:
As noted in the TSB 2044640/4 May 22, 2018; https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...44594-9999.pdf
"Production Solution
Optimized oil strainer 079115175G for oil supply lines to turbochargers in the cover in the inner valley of
engine. The oil strainer and check valve 079103175C must always be replaced to ensure proper oil flow to
the turbochargers."

Also look at the part number on the turbo, to see if it is the old part number or the replacement one.

No, unless someone changed them already. Go back and look at the document in post 366. The production solution on the TSB first appears in the revision 3, May 2018.

(1) The car may have had the screens deliberately replaced as a preventative measure or as as supplementary measure when the oil separator was replaced per TSB. This would have resolved the issue on that specific carr.
(2) The car may have had the turbos replaced with the 721/722 new turbos but retain the old oil screen which means they are going to fail again (shortly).

I thought the problem was with the oil screens not the turbos? This presents two problems:-
(1) The car may have had the screens deliberately replaced as a preventative measure or as as supplementary measure when the oil separator was replaced per TSB. This would have resolved the issue on that specific carr.
(2) The car may have had the turbos replaced with the 721/722 new turbos but retain the old oil screen which means they are going to fail again (shortly).

If the car is under warranty and the turbos fail, the turbo TSB service procedure includes replacing the turbos, turbo oil supply screen, check valve and wastegates, .
If the turbos were replaced under warranty, they should have replaced the oil screen.

3rd party warranty
Has anyone had any experience regarding turbo failures while under 3rd Party Warranty? If you take the car in AFTER factory and CPO warranty expired, do they fret over potential TD1 flagging or report to 3rd party warranties on tunes or the lack thereof?
--
I am not advocating that anyone cheat on their warranties, but the practical matter is that if you have an APR reprogrammed ECU and 3rd party warranty coverage, this may be the deciding factor as to whether you take it to an Audi Dealer or an independent shop. Also, given that a preventative fix on the oil screen bull**** costs about the same as 3~4 years of 3rd party warranty coverage the latter might be an attractive option.

Should I worry?
2015 A8 with 70,000 miles and turbos went while I was out of town. Got it repaired at Audi dealer and drove back home (100 miles) today. When I stopped the car to pull into my garage, coolant started steaming out front grill. No warning lights or overheat indication. Stopped after couple minutes. Reserve tank looks fine. Should I be concerned?
