At least in the US, my sense is that demand for V6 in $100K luxury seden is small. I don't know if the figures are available for BMW 740 vs. 750 or Mercedes S400 vs. S550, but I would be surprised if they make up even 25% of the total market share. However as BMW and Mercedes both offer a V6 option in their top sedans, it makes sense for Audi to do the same. As for resale, I think fully optioned V6 would take a proportionately much larger depreciation than stripped version of V6. Furthermore, at least for BMW and Mercedes, you can't fully option out their V6 models as many luxury features are only available on the V8.

Yup, if you think the 3.0T better suits your needs, then your dealer will have product info and ordering details sometime in February---but possibly not pricing data until closer to launch; you'll have to check on that. I'd be curious to see when dealer demo units are slated to make it over here in North America. I'd want to test drive that engine in the A8 before making any decision; no matter how well the supercharged V6 carries itself in the A6 and A7, it's driving and performance characteristics in the larger A8 are still unknown quantities---even with the added hp ponies from the S4 version of this engine. Also consider this: no matter how good the V6 feels in the A6/A7, we don't really know how much better those vehicles would feel and perform in a V8 version. In other words, especially for A7 customers, would there be enough difference for them to have skipped over the V6 and opted for the V8?

The other thing we haven't discussed is future trade-in/resale valuation compared to the V8. I haven't looked at how the 7-series and Panamera V6ers compare to V8s in this regard---is there enough of a pre-owned market for the smaller engine versus the V8? Perhaps it's too early in the game to get a handle on this to project onto the A8, but it is something to think about if you're going to buy the car. If you plan on leasing, then not a major concern.
I agree about the test driving aspect---I would want that experience before pulling the trigger on the 3.0T. Trade-in value is not an issue as I plan to lease. However, as you know, the vehicle's estimated residual value has a big effect on the lease. The pre-owned market for a 3.0T equipped A8L may be much smaller than the V8 market. Also, as xradman points out in his last post here, the option list for the 3.0T version is likely to be pared down/limited compared to the V8. Audi (and others) tend to do that for the smaller power plant versions of the same models. I'll talk to my dealer today and find out what they know. Can't judge the 3.0T launch from the European sites as Audi treats the states so differently relative to options/packages availability.

They've had the 3.0T in China since the D4's launch, in lower power (~270hp) and high output (333 hp) - I found an app for the ipad that showed me this. I can't say that I know Chinese car magazines, so reviews might be a bit rare.

My own experiences with the A6/7 make me think the engine will make a nice addition to the family.

Over here in the UK, the diesel is king. I'd say 75%+ of sales are of the 3.0 TDI rather than the 4.2. The resale value of diesel's is much better too, as people can afford to run such a big car with a top notch specification ... and it returns 40 mpg+ (37mpg US). A decent dollop of torque and power ... there you go, lots more A8's on the road.

My dealer actually said to me when we were buying the A6, it was cheaper for him to sell us a 3.0TDI A8 than the car we bought, the financial incentives were better on the 8.

Go figure!

Today an Audi rep at the Chicago Auto Show told me the 3.0 would likely start around $70,000.
