Stranded on the Dan Ryan eh? That's a rough road at night.
My '87 5000CS quattro had 286k when it became no fun to repair or drive anymore. That's when I bought my 2004 A8L and never looked back.

Have you taken off the timing belt covers and checked the belt's condition? Also, have you replaced the serpintine drive belt yet? If so, at what mileage?
I was planning to have my timing belt done at 150,000 miles (double the recommended interval) or maybe sooner but it still looks good.

2004 A8L just hit 120,500 miles. Runs strong, love it! BUT trunk not closing right again (Audi replaced hinges once already), 2 lower door moldings bulging due to rust of internal steel bars(audi won't fix under corrioson warranty), front suspension bushings squeaking and worn so control arms need replacing, replaced right front wheel bearing(100k -$350.00) but left now making noise so its time to replace it, air suspension pump sometimes gives fault and doesn't pump -(new pump soon and told $1000 cost), Air Conditioning pump failed at 105,000 - $1600.00, Drivers door storage compartment broke - flops open and close now, intermittent problem with motor mount causes check engin fault, Thermostat stuck so cam belt water pump service early at 80,000, and transmission pan gasket started leaking at 85,000 gasket and fluid $300.00. Just got audi notice, spark plug coil recall, paid to replace one already and needs brakes again.
I will keep at least to 150K then want another used 2007+ A8L.

Engine rust????
Hi there,
This seems the perfect thread to ask the following... Looking to buy a 2004 A8 (with about 120' miles) and noticed that the car had what looked to be rust on the engine. While I don't think it was actually rust - the silver paint was 'bubbling'.
So my question - is this to be expected with age, or a sign of a potentially sick engine?
Any thoughts will be appreciated
Thanks!

Well the car is going on 5 years old but this doesn't seem normal to me. I don't have one spot of rust anywhere in the engine that I can see at least. I've seen maybe 10 pencil tip sized spots on the rear bumper, and got them out with a medium brillow pad and some polish. Could they have lived in a northern state and somehow gotten a ton of salt somehow on the engine without washing it off? I have no idea why it would be rusting. See if it is just a small coat of rust on top or if it has penetrated below just the silver coat of paint.

2004 - 135K
My '04 A8L has over 135,000 miles on it now, almost all in the PA/NJ/NY area, with tons of road salt in the winter. No rust or bubbling that I can see on the engine; only rusty parts are some metal clips around the radiator area that are fairly corroded. Peeling paint on the engine itself seems like something to look out for -- maybe a bad re-paint job by someone?
