I suddenly developed a whistling noise seeming to come from the area of the right vent or the door on the front passenger side in my 2009 A8. The noise increases with speed. It disappears entirely when the recirculation button on the AC is pushed. I brought it in to the dealer, thinking that something was wrong with the HVAC system. They thought it was due to an air leak around the door. It cost me 3 hours labor for them to not fix it. I pointed out that if the recirc button made the noise go away, surely there was a vent somewhere in the heater assembly that wasn't shutting completely. I inspected the gaskets around the front door and they look identical to those around the other doors.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like a sticky recirc flap not opening/closing properly. Do a vagcom diagnostic cycle on the HVAC system and see what comes up.

Unfortunately I do not have a vagcom and have to trust that the dealer did this. They say no abnormalities were found.

When my (MY06 A8) passenger door auto-close feature was fixed under warranty the dealer did not put everything back together just right and I suffered from the same problem that appeared at speed and disappeared with the recirculation button. The car went back 3 or 4 times before they finally fixed their mistake. They claimed (twice) they had to completely take apart the door to fix the issue and blamed a plastic trim piece and not a valve/motor in the HVAC system but who knows...
