I have decided to upgrade the trunk lid on my '08 A8 to the S8 trunk lid that has the integrated spoiler.

Does anybody know the most cost effective place to purchase this (new or used)?

Very rare to find used but check breakers and ebay. I got mine off ebay UK. Note that the last models of the D3 A8 also got the S8 lid, at least in Europe, so donīt limit search only to "S8"
