Default What I Learned in the Snow Today

So, I went for my first bad weather drive and learned a lot. I thought I'd share my observations as they may be helpful. I'm sure the vets here already knew all of this, but feel free to add on to the list if you have any other helpful tips.

1. Quattro may get you out of a jam, but snow tires will keep you out of it in the first place.

2. Snow build up on front and rear bumpers will throw false warnings on the proximity sensors.

3. Even when snow covered, the rear view camera can show a false image that looks a lot like the road behind you.

4. Driving in Lift mode does not make your car a Range Rover.

5. Shifting the transmission into "S" does instill confidence on slippery roads.

Here is what a learned yesterday

3 hours I was trying to get it out of there.
Even if you have a good clearence in lift mode, the car keeps leveling itself in the snow and it's impossible to turn it off, so it will just start lying on the snow

I believe the S is as in Sport, not Snow!

You put it in lift then jack mode to lock the suspension at that height.

It seemed like it kept the revs down. What changes to performance should "S" provide.

S is the sport mode and it actually increases the shift points. It does make it a lot more fun to drive. Most of the time in the winter I keep it in "S" and switch the traction/stability control off. We've had over 80" of snow in January alone and the white stuff just keeps coming.

Since I live in the mountains I now about snow. First raise car up, you can also select jack mode to lock it high, second TURN OFF STABILITY CONTROL! Stability control changes wheel slip! Tow hook in trunk tool kit
and get good tow strap. I run studded snows.

I think quattro sucks. Well, maybe does not suck, but its not really good. My two right wheels did not have any traction(read were in the air) and left wheels would not move at all. Was pretty embarrassing to be pulled out from snow by couple rednecks driving a pickup truck. "Audi did not make it, he?" is not what you want to hear.
Since then I trust just my Grand Cherokee with quadra drive
Quattro is good only when all four wheels have traction. Its meant for performance driving, but its definitely not up for challenges.
