W12 dealer purchased maintenance observations--no brainer; reads on 4.2's and S8's too
When I bought my certified W12, I inquired carefully about the add on maintenance. It was $690 MSRP for three years/3 services. Price was $650 until earlier this year. By this I mean the period BEYOND the first 4 years/50K miles that was included in 2006's but now is a separate purchase item. The $690 buys service at 55K, 65K and 75K miles, or at the annual points for three years in lieu. It has to be bought at the time of sale of a certified car.
Well a quick check at the parts counter to confirm spark plug prices, filter prices and thinking about 13 quarts of oil per change told me in no time their flat rate pricing makes this very compelling for W12's which automatically have more parts (and oil!) involved in tune ups. W12's have a 35-40K mile cycle for air filter and plugs, while 4.2's are on a 50K cycle. Thus the W12's pick up another major tune up in the extended maintenance window. Apparently 4.2's pick up their first major one too, since by slipping in the 5K initial mini-service and sliding the next one out to 15K instead of 10K, Audi conveniently shifted the first major maintenance service on 4.2's to 55K miles, just outside of the 4/50 new car maintenance window. A glance at the 2007maintenance schedule led me to believe S8 5.2's generally follow the 4.2 maintenance schedule.
Interestingly at the other end of the spectrum the small engines that still need a timing belt change--1.8T's and 2.0T's--looked like a decent value just for that reason alone, assuming the belt is as expensive to change as on prior pre-chain driven cam motors (older 4.2's, 3.0's, 2.8's, etc.)

decent deal on A8 as well?
I'm getting an '06 A8 4.2 and debating on the same deal- '06's have the maintenance included to 50K and I figure I'll keep it past since it's CPO'ed. Maybe 690 is a decent insurance policy...

Not true AFAIK
It covers anything that Audi checks the box on for routine maintenance in their maintenance table in service manual--same approach as the first 50K, which means things like the brake fluid change every two years gets pulled in at year 6 too.
Here is Audi's web site blurb:
Additionally, an Audi Care Certified pre-owned Vehicle Plan will be available July 1, 2006. A customer who purchases an Audi 2004 model year or newer Certified pre-owned vehicle from an authorized Audi dealership in the U.S. will have the opportunity to purchase the Audi Care Certified pre-owned Vehicle Plan. The plan covers manufacturer-required regularly scheduled maintenance services at 55,000 miles, 65,000 miles and 75,000 miles, or 7 years from the original vehicle in-service date, whichever comes first.
* The Audi Care Certified pre-owned Vehicle Plan cost is $690. MSRP
It means some cars pick up timing belt changes--RS6's every 30K miles and others at that last 75K mile point. Some have mandatory serp. belt changes too--not nearly as expensive--like RS4's.
