What specifically is the problem with the trunk hinges?

Default Re: What specifically is the problem with the trunk hinges?

When I close the trunk, either automatically or manually, the Rt side (looking from the rear)doesn't close properly, after a second or 2 I hear a thunk like it wants to close but doesn't completely. The trunk open indicator light stays on. It has been extremely cold (-0) here in WI of late and some things I have read on this board say cold weather has a detrimental effect. The stealer doesn't sell many A8's so they really have no idea except to start replacing everything. I tried WD 40 on all parts I could see to no avail. Any ideas are appreciated.

Default Replacement will not guarantee a fix

The hinges on my '04 were replaced under warranty but when the temps drop below 25F or so the trunk will not close on its own. I have no idea why the cold affects it in such a way, but my local dealer opines that it's normal.

i had the exact same problem, but it turned out to be a buildup of ice in crevices around the trunk hinges (and it was also the right side). If you've gone to the trouble to WD40 things, then I'm sure you've checked for ice, so I doubt this is what's going on with yours. Do you have a warm garage you can leave the car in for a day?

I had same exact problem on my '04. Dealer replaced hinges and so far has worked, but too soon to tell. They told me new hinges are "upgraded" and more durable, but who knows? Anyway, long story, but received extra set of hinges and have posted in the classifieds in case you're interested. They are silver and brand new.

Default The hinge bends somehow - inward.....

I have had this problem twice now. The first time they replaced the hinges and the trunk worked for about 1.5 yrs. Then it got cold again and the problem occurred again. If you search for trunk hinge problems you'll find that most occur in the winter/cold weather. The second time - also under warranty - they replaced the hinges, but then the latch wouldn't work. So I had to drive around for a week with out the trunk latched until a new latch arrived and was installed. The second time it happened the hinge was noticeably bend inward about 1/2 to 1 inch. I'm not sure what made it happen. I didn't think the trunk motor was that strong. The trunk was not over stuffed. I run out of warranty in April and am worried this will happen again. I posted my experiences a few weeks ago in this forum.

Default It's not normal for a car of this caliber.....

to breakdown for something as simple as a trunk. If that's normal then audi shouldn't sell cars. I've had tis problem twice now and it's very frustrating.
