Trunk Lock Replacement
I wrote up a quick fix for the trunk lock issue that causes a lot of grief and is relatively easy and inexpensive to fix.

<p>This resolves issues with having to slam trunk to get it to latch and having the trunk close and then re-open when you press the close button. The trunk latch was known to be defective and has been re-designed. This same part is used on the A4,A5,A6, Jetta and Passat.</p>

2) If you go to the dealer pick up an extra metal clip that is used on the trunk trim that you will be pulling off. They get lost very easily.

<p>4) On the other side on the handle pull there is a small plastic door that when opened will reveal two Phillips screws that secure the
other handle lift to trunk. </p>

8) Disconnect connector to trunk release and remove 2 – 10mm nuts, note position of emergency release and lock cables.Remove lock cable first (cable coming from right bottom in picture). Unbolt unit and then slide emergency release cable out.

9) Remove and replace motor assemble, and replace BOTH cables the same order as you took them out. Remember to replace flat plastic cover over release cables. My trunk just went into "winter mode" where it won't latch anymore. Doesn't even try to latch, the motor doesn't even sound like it tries. So is this what will fix it you are saying? Also do you notice a physical difference in the old lock vs the new one that you got?

Yes, you can hear the latch when the trunk shuts. The trunk is back to operating correctly after lubricating the hinges and fixing the lock. The whole procedure takes less than an hour, is relatively easy and well worth it if you are having trunk lock issues. Slamming the trunk down hard several times is not the correct way to treat the car.

I could manually move the lock mechanism with the trunk open but no matter how hard or how I shut the trunk the lock won't engage. It's currently sitting trunk unlocked unfortunately. I just want to make sure if I do the replacement of the lock as the OP said that it will in fact work and the lock will engage regardless of temperature.

When i took mine apart and lubed it with MBI Instrument grease, it worked fine from then on. Minr failed away from home so the trunk coontents went into the back seat. German engineering.

Beginning to wonder if mine is locking or not - have never heard any noticeable "latch" sound.
I know it's turned on in MMI but have never tested it.
Other than not having the key with you and trying it is there any way to know if it's actually locked ?

Just pull up on the trunk and it will pop open if it does not close properly. This makes for a very unsafe situation for storing anything valuable in the trunk. Lubrication may solve the problem for a few minutes, but something else in the latch goes bad. It is well worth just fixing the problem for good.

Thanks for the DIY write-up. It worked great, but for one thing:
The M5 screw holding the emergency handle on has red-loctite on it. I was using a M25 torx safety bit on it. It twisted it.
So I go get my heavy duty M25 Torx. It snapped the head of the screw off.
so I go buy a screw extractor and drill into the remaining body of the screw. Then the screw extractor snaps. Mother @$$^%^^&*!!!!
So I'm kind of stuck now. The trunk latch is replaced and works fine now, so that's most important. That perfectionist is a little nonplused though since I can't put that handle back on. I might just superglue it on since it fits over a decent-sized hex. Grrrr.

Take ceramic drill bit 4mm, drill extractor and rest of that bolt and clean the tread with M5 tap. Carefully. Don't brake that too. Though ceramic drill can drill it.
