Default Sudden increase in temp - overheat

Wife just drove car 5 miles to store and back. On the way back, temperature gauge shot to max hot and car computer flashed red overheat symbol...

No leaks, reservior full of coolant.

Faulty thermostat?

Not safe to drive so tow to dealer?

Just had car in last week for MMI upgrade...coincidence or just poor Audi quality.
Car has only 26K miles.

thanks!

Probably the thermostat has gone bad, don't drive it, unless dealer is just a few miles away.Tow it!

99% thermostat
drive with the heater on and windows rolled down to dealer
easy repair

Default Had exact same problem one week after my car went out of warranty!

Temperature would read normal and in the space of a few seconds would show overheating. My dealer is 30 miles away, so no question of driving to the dealer. Called up Audi roadside assistance and got the car towed to the dealer. Problem was diagnosed as a faulty thermostat. Repaired free of charge as a customer courtesy.

Default Yes - faulty thermostat (long)

This happened to me recently ('05 A8L 30K miles).
Screen started flashing red overheat symbol. I called the dealer because I just happened to have an appointment the next day. Guess what - the young lady on the phone told me to drive it in-no problem! Service advisor told me this is becoming known problem on cars w/30K plus.

Luckily, I know better and called road side assistance for a tow from my home the next morning. Got up at six am and called as instructed. After four follow up calls the truck finally showed up at 10:30 am (glad I was at home and not stranded somewhere).

The tow was OK but the driver told my wife he wasn't sure where the dealer was.

It's an involved job requires removal of front fascia and some special cam lock tools. Everything turned out well but I wouldn't want to pay out of pocket.

If you must drive it, putting the heat on max is surprisingly effective at bringing down the temp quickly. Good luck.

you guys are so smart!
I did have it towed. Tow service via audi RSA called at 5am even though we set it at 6am. way too early. Ended up coming at 730.

bad thermostat. I told SA things like this shouldn't happen. He just says..."I've seen a few, it does happen"

p/u car at night, next morning i notice the plastic skid plate isn't fully installed, half of it is hanging 1 inch from the ground. I'm like I don't recall the car being that low.

So time to go back to dealer on monday to show them their mistake.

thanks for all the info guys/gals
