Default Locking bolt removal and access issue/question

I am attempting a TB replacement (first time) and while I can see the locking bolt, I am at a loss on how to access it. I have followed the Bentley but I can not get any where near it to remove.

Do I have to remove the A/C compressor as well? Also what kind of bolt is it? Any and all ideas/help will be welcome. Thanks

Default Tool looks like...

this, assuming it's still the same as it was on my 2000 A6 4.2, and the 2.8 V6 before that. Not something you are going to fashion with a hardware store bolt; sounds like you don't have the tool?

I haven't done a D3 4.2, but from my C5 4.2, the access port was directly accessible using a long socket extension. It was very non descript the first time I went looking for it, and I vaguely remember that maybe Bentley led me to look too far forward. At least on the A6 4.2, it was clearly out of the way and to the rear of the A/C compressor.

Do you have the locking cam bar (really needed), the gear puller (can be improvised around w/ difficulty, but puller is much easier), the tensioner locking pin (can be improvised with a thick paper clip), and the adjuster spacer/shim (can also use an allen wrench of same thickness instead)? On C5's you had to deal w/ a viscous fan clutch too that really needed a special tool, at least if you did the job like I used to without pulling the front clip to the "lock position." But IIRC, the D3's don't have the viscous fan any more--same as my W12, except W12's don't have timing belts to deal with either.

I just followed the Bentley manual procedure. Did two timing belt replacements on my '04 to date. I recall a long 3/8" drive extension with a universal joint with a hex head drive bit. The fender well plastic lindr had to be removed to access.

I did it last year. I don't think you need to take the liner out, but you do need to remove the driver's side front wheel. You can also reach it by hand by going up through the subframe to get it started.
