Default Removing rear seat headrests - A8 D3

Has anyone removed the rear seat headrests from a D3 with the bench rear seat? The Audi shop manual has instructions to disconnect the battery, and disconnect a lot of airbag stuff to get the rear seat out. This car is a 2007 if that makes any difference.

IS there a way to get the headrests out WITHOUT removing the seat (e.g. tilting it forward in some way?) so the battery disconnect and airbag stuff doesn't need to be done? I don't think there is enough room between the top of these "gigantic" headrests and the headliner to remove them with the seat in its installed position.

Any experience or knowledge of how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Gary--

You have to take out seat but you do not have to unplug airbags. First comes out lower part. Just like any car. Back part has two big bolts beneath it and two 10 mm bolts hidden behind middle headrest. Than lift it off. This will help:

Gary--

I want to eventually replace my headrests with A6 headrests as shown in another member's signature. Have not found a set of Amaretto A6 headrests yet, but decided to see if I could improve the existing situation a bit.

One problem with the A8 headrests, as far as actually using them to lean back and relax is concerned, is that they sits too high off the top of the seat. So, after removing the headrests I cut the metal support bars down enough to allow the headrest to clear the roof when I want to remove them. Then I Dremmeled back the notch that prevents them from going down all the way so that the headrest sits on top of the seatback. They're still not as comfortable as the A6 headrests I took out of my 06 A6 Avant to test with, but better than factory set up was.
