Long commutes in our D3's
I am a heavy equipment operator for pipeline and vertical drilling. My employer just called and let me know about a job 100km away. Thats 200km round trip. My '07 has 144k km(70k ish miles) and I am thinking of commuting. Normally I just get a room using my living allowance from the company and union.
What are your thoughts? Driving will be a little cheaper and I can bank some cash, but i'll rack the mileage up. Staying in a motel, eating out or my portable bbq, and more money for a room.
I've been working out of town off and on for years, but never a contract only 1.5 hours away without traffic, far more in the evening.
Yes I am the only Audi on a jobsite. Almost eveything is 2nd car junk for work, or top trim diesel trucks LOL

With over 250,000 miles (400,000+KM) on mine; I've still done a round trip between Chicago & Detroit (270 miles/430 KM each way) within the past year. That said, as I'm getting older, I usually spend the night on distances like that.
I's your body that you'd be taxing, not so much the car. It can handle it. I assume you have to be on the job 5 days a week so you'd be turning around right after getting home & sleeping. To me, a happy medium would be come home Wednesday evening but stay there M, T & Th nights.
I've experienced this about 30 years ago where I had to be at the test track (TRC of Ohio-when it was an independent facility) so about 140 miles each way. I was single but dating and, well, you know..... No A8, at the time it was with my VW Scirocco S.

These beauties do long trips (or commutes) just fine. I do a few trips a year that are 8-10 hours to/from destination. I've never been worn out from the car, but traffic stress and my level of rest are definite considerations. My point is, the car is very comfortable on/for long journeys.
Go-go juice will, obviously, add up. But I'm able to deduct mileage, so it works for me.

Thanks for the response folks. I have taken my S8 on a couple of short 6 hour road trips and it was fantastic, little harsh on the rough roads, but great. This is a 5 day a week contract. It's definitely food for thought splitting up the nights. Plus my wife is due for our first baby in July. I'd like to be at home as much as possible to help her out and see my new little twerp lol

I worked about 1.5 hours away from home for a while. Driving back and forth was too much for me. Also too expensive. I ended up living in my 5th wheel camper. But with a baby on the way I can understand wanting to be home as much as possible.

My daily commute is 150mi/241km round trip with an abundance of traffic. I mix it up between my TT and my A8. The A8 can certainly handle the drive and wear with relative ease, and the ride is easier/more comfortable than in the TT. I drive the TT to ease the mileage on the A8, as well as better fuel economy.

I drive about an hour each day, 5-7 days a week. I've put close to 10k on my D3 since I bought it in November! Getting ready to take her in for TB service #2 in two weeks, and after that I'm tackling the brakes/lower control arm bushings. Gas is expensive, but I love driving this car and no longer dread my commute. The only downside are all of the little knicks that the front bumper/lower part of the hood have received from so much highway driving.

I drive 2 hours per day for work...have been for 16 years...the big 8 is fantastic in this role. I have found that anything over 1 hour each way gets painful.
