I don't think that low coolant can stop temp gauge working. It would be absolutely ridiculous. Most likely it is sensor or loose contact to it.

The coolant was between the min and max levels so just topped when I did the washer tank iv not seen any obvious coolant leaks or wet patches under car but gonna get it up on ramp and pull off all the plastics to give good check over

Default When you pull covers off, also look

very carefully along the lower edge of the radiator for any signs of dampness. I caught that on mine while under warranty and sure enough, new radiator came of it. It didn't drip and basically burned off with the engine heat, so I had to look for the dampness to find it. Early on, I also found a small leak at a clamp where the heater valve is under the plenum cover to the left of the HVAC filter area. The two combined apparently had led the prior owner and dealer to look for a small leak they never found originally; the paperwork said that and I found a few marks on the overflow reservoir that looked like someone was tracking the level before me.

I actually need to look again since when I put the car in the garage and the motor is hot I can just smell the tiniest bit of antifreeze cook off--a bit of a sweet smell instead of a burnt oil type smell.

Cheers for that will check that out when I get all the under side plastics off iv never smelt that yet but will keep an eye out
