Buying a Preowned 2005 Audi A8. PLEASE HELP
I found a great deal which I'm interested in. It's for an 2005 Northern Pearl Blue Audi A8L.
So the car looks great inside and out. I was really happy with it but my major concern was the maintenance. I know Audi's generally around 80k miles need a timing belt and water pump replacement. This has 85k miles. I looked at the carfax reports and it's been done last year the replacement and maintenance. It was actually in the shop last month for an oil and filter change. All and all the car reports look great.
It's a wholeseller who is selling me the car. I really want to buy this car but I'm worried about issues that may arise or added maintenance costs. Is there any other things I should look to replace or look into in the 90k/100k and etc mark. Like I said Timing Belt and Water pump have been replaced. I'm buying the car for around 10k.
Will the car run solid for another 20-40k miles? Should I be worried or pass up this offer?

. Above all the issues I've mentioned, if it aint broke, don't fix it. The timing belt service is a huge bonus. Other than that these are awesome cars that will look and run great for a long long time if taken care of.

Well first off please be careful about copying and pasting carfax info in other places because they can possibly catch that and can revoke the subscription, you never know. Other than that looks like the car has had excellent history. 04-05 were bad years since it was the first couple years of the new body style and new gadgets so bugs had to be worked out of it. I would be worried about the front airshocks, control arm bushings, trunk motor issues, and the mmi screen getting stuck in the future. Just an FYI. On the front airshocks, you can come out one day and your front end is on the ground. Those are about $1500-$1800 per shock at the dealer depending on where you live. That's not including labor. If you like it and think it's a go then it's ok in my book . Above all the issues I've mentioned, if it aint broke, don't fix it. The timing belt service is a huge bonus. Other than that these are awesome cars that will look and run great for a long long time if taken care of.

Everything on these cars is expensive. The reason they're so cheap used is because they're a bundle to repair. I just put $2400 into my 2007 with a prescription for another $4200 for suspension work.
My 2004 was worse. Bad trunk motor, bad trunk latch, bad evap system, failing caliper motor, bad blower resistor... This is one of those things where if you have to ask you probably don't want to know.

VCDS scan would be better than CARFAX. It would tell what's wrong with the car now.
Air suspension vice, if you drive carefully it can last for a very long time. Trunk motor is unnecessary feature and it will still close it if the motor is weak. Replacement gears for the MMI screen are $55 plus 2-3 hours of not heavy work.
Buying $100K car for $10K is a unique opportunity to own a real luxury car even if you have to spend a few bucks for repairs. It won't be much with online parts and this forum.
Edit: Refurbished front strut is ~$700 and it would be only one not two. Replacing it is one hour labor. It is DIY by all means.

I love all of the first posts with "HELP, HELP, HELP" etc.
Please simply search this forum for the past few years scanning for interesting titles and read them to get an idea about the vehicle. You have a 50/50 chance of an air strut leaking. You have a 75% chance that the electric air compressor for the suspension (made by the good folks at WABCO automotive) will fail. Please simply search this forum for the past few years scanning for interesting titles and read them to get an idea about the vehicle. You have a 50/50 chance of an air strut leaking. You have a 75% chance that the electric air compressor for the suspension (made by the good folks at WABCO automotive) will fail. Then there are the coil packs, rear sunshade, suspension bushings, Headlight lamps and more that can fail. Bottom line, if you are a diy'er, the car will be a good purchase. I agree with Mishar and Bally, get the car scanned with VCDS and have it checked out by a mechanic who knows Audi, if you're not mechanically savvy and don't know much about these machines. Cap1, your noise is not timing chain tensioners, your car has a timing belt, so there wouldn't be timing chain tensioners...I'd get another opinion on that one. I know some of the 3.2 motors had this common issue.
I owned an 05 which I bought with 70K. Kept it until 117K and other than routine maintenance and a serpintine belt tensioner, it was a great car. Now I have an 07 which I like even more (more options, sport pckge). So, just make sure the car's for you. Like others have said, if you're not a diy'er, buy a Lexus or Honda. These are great cars, but if you plan in going to the dealer for anything, it's going to cost you. Good Luck and use this site, it's an excellent resource.

The 4.2 does have timing chains between the cams with tensioners, I have had these go bad on my son's 3.0 and now the drivers side on his 4.2 A6, the 3.0 made one hell of a racket when first started, the 4.2 not so bad, and when unplugged the noise is gone, but the so is your power, see pics.
