Is this standard automotive troubleshooting technique?

Movign the post to here ( was posted in a nother thread that's 5 years ago):

I am also in the search for correct parts for my 2011 Q5 2.0 TFSI premium plus(delivered in 2010 summer). Some websites say use different rear rotor and pads for Q5 manufactuered before 2011 May and after 2011 May.
I think for mine (mfg'd before 2011 May) it should be 300mm/12 mm rotors and matching pads. But I can't find a good matching ceramic pads in local markets (Ottawa Canada). Does anyone here know if I can use the bigger rotors (320mm/22mm) with my model? I am concerned if the cover plate is big enough and if 22mm rotor is too thick for the caliper (and braking system) to work. I am tired of the black brake dust with the original pads.
Another question is about replacing the rear rotor/pads without using a VAG computer tool. My idea may be too silly but can you do the replacement with just turn off the engine without applying the e-brake and leaving the shift at N position? That way the braking is not loacked (of course you need to block the wheels to prevent car sliding).

You're in the wrong forum group. This is the group for A8 D3 cars. Also it seems what you are suggesting about changing rear pads without VCDS will not work. There is no way that I'm aware of to teach the computer the new pad thickness without VCDS. This could be different with a 2011 Q5 but I doubt it.

As far as I remember you don't have to teach the computer anything. If you just leave previous pad thickness, which is most likely same as new pad thickness, turn caliper pistons until you completely retract parking brake actuators, push them in and install new pads, it will work just fine. As I said - as far as I can remember.

Thank you for the answer, mishar. I'll have it done by an auto shop who has the VCDS tool, but may buy the parts myself.

Make sure for the rear brakes you follow the instructions HERE exactly. Otherwise you will spend unnecessary time later getting rid of the brake warning light.
