Wait until you get the optical loop and start to find out which one is bad. When I put on both of the new gateways, everything boot up perfectly. It's not your can gateway since both of them failed. What are the chances that both fail? One stupid question, did you plug in both power and optical connectors. Do you see the optical connector blink for a few secs as soon as you turn on power ?
Cheers,
Louis

Check this
http://www.dognmonkey.com/audi/an-op...t-results.html
If the most bus is running, it must blink to detect the components. Wherever it stops blinking, the one in front of it is dead. It's serial as I understand. There's a diagram of the loop on one of my posts or my website. You can open one by one to see. Start with the cd. Make sure to turn off and on every test for it to initialize.
The reasons people wasted money buying things they don't need because they don't check out what I tested. When I unplugged the optical - gateway reported MALFUNCTION.
Cheers,
Louis

If can gateway doesn't have signal input, the component #10 is the problem in this diagram. Follow the arrows in/out of a component.

There is a chance that the "new" Gateway is broken too. Do you have Optic Ring scan?

#10 I think is the navigation. Until you find the bad optical bus, it's no use to access the gateway. If you have any home optical cable, you may want to use it to loop. Never tried it.
