Just Finished MMI Gear replacement...
what a headache! I did it in situ as others have suggested, but was afflicted by Murphy's law. When popping off the gear on opposite side of the one that was stripped, it flung in the air, and yes...fell back behind the dash. Had to drop the glovebox and then pull the console. Finally found it under one of the air ducts running to the back seats.
Then when reassembling, the circlip that holds the large gear popped out of my pliers and vanished...finally picked it up by sweeping the entire interior with a large magnet.
Short story long...took me 6 hours. Definitely would have been easier to take the radio out of the car and fixed it on the bench. Oh well...I just hope there won't be a next time!

I've got to get around to this myself...couple weeks ago used the milled oil filter cap (also compliments of mishar) after my oil change, and realized that the screen gear project should probably be next.

It's not too bad...but I have some BTDT for ya...
You can do it with the screen in the car, but (1) fill every cavity with towels to avoid parts going behind the dash; (ii) have lots of towels and masking tape to protect parts from scrapes, etc. Once you start reassembling, I can't stress how important it is to get the pieces into the correct position before installing the motor gear, and then the large gear. The screen cover has to be closed fully, and the swing arms (?) have to be in their full articulated position.... If you don't have them right, the screen wont open properly and it'll feel like you are forcing parts together. don't. When it's right, it will all fit together easily.
I wouldn't try to put the circlip back on the gear shaft for the large gear until it is all back together. Once it is, you can move the screen to its down position, where the shaft will be fully accessible. Put a large magnet under when you try to install it just in case the circlip falls.

Oh yeah...
you'll love it once you get it down. My screen now operates so smoothly it seems that it never moved this smoothly in the past. Just reminds how nice the car is when working properly.
