Audi S8 5.2 V10 Transmission ATF Drain and Fill piece of cake

Its eight nuts or so per side so not bad at all. They all came out clean until the last one. You can see once the flex pipes are out there is clearance to drop the pan. Not much but enough to wiggle it out. Be sure to get a new gasket and that the mating surface is nice and smooth. Mine had corrosion on the pan surface and had to use reinzosil to prevent leakage after cleaning it. I used this opportunity to weld new stainless flex sections into the pipes and service the valve body solenoids and mechatronic seal. You can see here where the stud broke, looks much more spacious in the pics. Its way up and was just able to get long bits up to drill out. It butts up directly to the catalyst so zero clearance on the back side. The hardest part was retapping the hole. Dont let mishaps deter you, a little patience and prep and its a piece of cake.

Alittle off topic but I see we have a different cooler setup, why does mine look different than yours ?? I have 08 S8 .
the cooler I have is larger than the one in your pic and it’s mounted in different place

Quick update: got to drive the S8 today tranny shifts just as smooth if not smoother than before , I will still plan for filter and gasket later on when I’m ready for battle, this quick fill was mostly precautionary, refresh atf , and top off.

Just want to add a little info for anyone else doing this. I have a 2007 S8 and it had a lot of the typically 2-1 lurching in these cars tend to have. Totally livable but it was there.
I changed fluid in the trans and did a differential fluid service. Got the car back and thought I made a big mistake. Suddenly it was slamming that 2-1 when coming to a stop. Now it wasn’t quite as livable as before.
On a whim I asked the shop if they had performed adaptations. They did not. I asked them if they would. They did. I got the car back and it was like new. Absolutely no remnants of the rough downshift. It shifts better than any of my old A8’s did.
I have a limited understanding of the exact capabilities of Audi’s system but I suspect that with time, the computer detects shifting changes in the transmission as a result of wearing fluid and makes incremental changes to line pressure and shift timing to compensate for the changes in viscosity. This is what makes it “lifetime” fluid. And so suddenly changing that fluid now hits the proverbial reset button, only now the PCM is running settings for different fluid and is unable to make large enough changes quickly enough to undo what’s it’s already done. So running adaptations becomes necessary.
