If the 3rd generation ASF all aluminum-bodied platform means nothing
in such comparison between A8 and LS to these car talkers, the brains of these guys might have been damaged by over Lexusercised. I had put over 18k on my 03 LS430; the really good about the LS is the dealer's service attitude not the car if the car is put against A8 for the comparison.

Lexus has going for it...
About only the 8 speed to deal with its absurd porker weight. Audi's are porkers to start and the Lexus weighs even ridiculously more, and can't explain it away given their 2WD in anything but the vaporware hybrid hypemobile. And vapormobile ain't no 12 cylinder either in terms of acceleration no matter what the purchased ad copy tries to position...
That its braking distance (2WD model available now) is so dangerously bad for a car in this class as reported in R&T for example is hard to overlook too. But hey, compared to the Audi since it has better resale value I guess the insurance companies won't total them in those front end wrecks for far longer than the A8's that won't get into the inremental wrecks to begin with, save for the driver factor.
If they had wanted to write a debatably more correct article, they could have pointed out Lexus' tendency toward technogadgets and bulletprrof reliability, but critiqued the porker weight, Buick ride and terrible brakes as examples. On the Audi they could have gone right to the horrendous depreciation, spotty early electronics and classic front push handling. Then we could stew but at least think they had a clue what they were writing about.

The Lexus is also a brand new model
Whereas the Audi is close to 4 years old. Of course a brand new model is going to have a few things going for it.
I always get agitated at these kinds of one on one comparisons when one car is clearly a little longer in the tooth than the others. If Audi had an all new model in 2008 to match Lexus, I wonder what the story would be then?
Do most people who buy A8's *strongly* consider the LS when buying? I know I didn't...7-series, S-Class, and A8. Maybe I missed the boat. I just think once you'be gotten used to German handling and ride quality, you'd likely not opt for something non-German.

Lexus interiors are nice but are like "generic" luxury
I owned a 1992 LS400 and it was extremely dependable. In fact it was the longest I have ever owned a single car (8 yrs). But the interiors seem to have large expanses of vinyl and the leather cracks after a few years. Audi interiors have real character with lots of little details and the leather still looks new after years of use. I don't see how a Lexus interior can be rated higher than an Audi.

Re: The Lexus is also a brand new model
It's interesting to note that the readers of AutoWeek chose the A8 L as the best luxury car this year, even in light of the new Lexus and the new Merc S550.
The Car and Driver comparison earlier this year also picked the Audi well ahead of all but the new S550 competitors, including the Lexus. It lost to the Mercedes by only one point, and that was because they were comparing an Audi which was a model year older and didn't have the more powerful engine. Apples to apples, it would probably have beaten it as well.
Not exactly long in the tooth, yet.

Agreed. They seem to become old Toyotas as they age.
I'm impressed with how good the Audi leather smells, even after 3 years of use. They hit all the senses well.
