Stiffness of shock absorbers is electrically controlled. There is a pair of wires going in every shock absorber from the very top of it. If there is not power to those wires shock absorbers are as stiff as possible. If all of them are stiff it is probably control module. Should have some faulty code.

You can look here for some great information on air suspension:

So if I'm reading that information right, is it just a matter of swapping out the controller behind the dash to get the sport suspension?

Default air compressor replacement

The air compressor is located in front of the driver side wheel well. It is fairly easy to get at, because it is located close to the ground. You can get one online for around $400-600. Replace it yourself its not that big of a job.

Default A8 air suspension problem

Ok,
I got my air compressor problem fixed. It turned out that the air compressor was good, but the relay and one fuse located by the air compressor were out.

So the Audi dealer said it was the compressor and they wanted $2300 to fix it, while this other local shop found out the real problem and it only costed me $270, including the diagnose and labor, parts were under $30.

The air compressor wasn't getting enough power, so if guys have the same problem check out the the relay and the fuse for the air compressor. My mechanic said they are located on the passenger side in the front, behind the wheel well. I saw some diagrams online that the air compressor is on the driver side, maybe the relay is on the passenger side i guess.

Good luck

Yeah, awesome find with the link. If you want a bunch more of the self study tech docs and others, use this link to the same site: http://www.volkspage.net/technik/ssp/index_eng.php/

D3 A8 = 2003 A8 on the site, most of the A8 SSP docs are in the high 200's.

Hi Tony,
I really need your help ASAP...
I have a 2004 Audi A8L with the same problem as yours. Can you please call me or email me with your mechanics number? So my mechanic can call your mechanic, so he can tell him exactly what "relay" & "fuse" part number to order... And to ask for a simple walk-thru. I also just went to the Audi dealership yesterday, and they gave me the evil smirk as they gave me the $2,400 price quote...
