Default My fuel mileage

My '04 A8L non-fsi 4.2L engine delivers 17.6 to 17.96 mpg in city driving for me. These are actual numbers I have recorded. The trip computer is usually within .2 mpg of actual per the odometer and the gas pump meter. On the highway I get 20.8 to 24.4 depending how fast I drive.

I always put in the cheapest regular unleaded fuel I can find.

Default Cheap Gas??

So I take it you haven't been putting in 92/93 high octane? Have you noticed any knocking or other issues with using the cheaper gas? In my last car, Passat V6, I used the cheaper gas and the dealer said they wouldn't cover any engine issues which resulted in using the lower octane gas than what was recommended in the owner's manual.

Default Re: Cheap Gas??

I admit, the first two tankfuls were the 92 octane gasoline. Then I decided to try the 87 stuff and never looked back. Car accelerates the same with no knock or ping. I admit, I have not used a stopwatch to determine if it now takes an additional 1/10th or 2/10th's of a second to hit 60 MPH. Besides, Ireally never floor the accelerator, normal acceleration is more than adequate for me.

At 20ยข less per gallon for regular, with 36,000 miles that I've put on the car, I figure I've saved $400.00 on gasoline purchases.

Car has 92,000 on the odometer. I bought it used with 56,000 miles about two years ago. Car was not CPO nor did I buy an extended warranty.
