I phoned dealer who then tells me its not possible and they don't sell the cd's, can any one throw some help my way as to how many update processes I need to do or is it just the one hit upgrade and if it is possible to upgrade my year. ps im based in england

No Bluetooth
There is no Bluetooth in 2004 A8, at least not here in the states, we had Onstar for 04 and first half of 05, as far as the 3d maps, I have heard that the European versions do have that, again here in the states with the 2g mmi we do not.
European 2G mmi versions are

Welcome!
You can find update CD's here, but I would rather go with OEM from Audi. Ask by part number. As Johnny said the latest European version is 5570 and p/n is 4L0 998 961.
Bluetooth wise, some European guys should be able to help you there since it is regional thing.
By the way, it is always good to fill your profile so guys would know where are you and what year is your baby.

Great reference Johnny! A few notes:
the point about needing to update to 3360 from 2750 and below is only true for 4140, but not true for 4610. I think 4140 has basically been proven "flawed" by that one issue and it's a real trap for the inexperienced. Thus, whether pre- or post- 3360, I would just go to 4610 and regard 4140 as one to avoid for any new upgrades.
Also remember 3360 and above separately invokes the need to get to at least a v5 Nav disk. By definition this basically implicates (U.S.) 2004's that never got a newer Nav disk [the version is the model year build as the baseline]; I notice a lot of the MMI upgrade posts often come from new owners of '04's.
Also as I recall some owners of very old MMI versions also end up needing various other patches to get everything right. I would have to look at the older posts again to sort out. It came up on the QW board earlier this year as I recall too.

Update CD set p/n 4L0 998 961 (A6/A8/Q7)
From http://gpsunderground.com/forum/audi...50-5570-a.html
"All firmware CDs you can order in every Audi dealer - CD cost around 3-5 Euro, and its 100% sure than loading something from net."

Nav disks: try your country's eBay; but, back to what you are trying to do too
Not sure exactly where you are located other than non-U.S. Assuming Non-U.S. has the same basic break point at 2004 (v4's) where a new Nav disk is required, if you were in the U.S. they would ultimately source from Navtek, but then through a dealer--I think distribution has changed over the years. But for an older vehicle the more practical solution is to get them from eBay. Others will have paid the money to update to a very current disk, and then sell their older one. Junk yards may sell them out of wrecked cars. Unfortunately, thieves at times too In any case, try eBay. If non-U.S. follows U.S. principles here, you would be looking for at least a version 5 disk, meaning something released for at least model year 2005 vehicles.
Be clear though from your original post that unless early Euro cars are different than U.S. ones relative to older OnStar and then newer bluetooth (switch in mid 2005), updating MMI won't by itself magically enable bluetooth and other things. The underlying modules need to be there. I also don't think 3G Nav was available in Europe until about 2009; it was never available on U.S. D3 A8's/S8's.

You should be able to get the disks from any audi dealer, if one tells you no just go to the next nearest one, they do sell them, current price is £4.50, some dealers will do it for you (at a cost) , theres a minefield of part numbers so get the right one or it will be one of the old set which is no longer made or available.
once updated - to get the 3d nav you need a nav disk greater than 2008/9 (i think, someone correct me if im wrong)
as someones also pointed out you may also get other issues caused by doing the update, component protection could kick in and you may need some other modules updated - nothing serious just niggles and need to be done by someone with VAS and or Vagcom
if your not going to buy vagcom yourself you might do well to get on one of the UK forums as well, as your more likely to get someone nearby who can help you out
