Default A8 purchasing advice!!

Hi everyone. just joined. Have 2008 A4 2.0TQ too small 4 me. looking to up to A8D34.2

Anyway, I came across a 2007 a8 with 80k for like $6k. clean title. clean car. seems too good to be true.

Tell me, what could possibly be wrong? Will I have issues with timing chain?

Don't you trust your luck and judgement? LOL.
$6k is about right for it. I'm sure it's a base model. I saw one before with immaculate condition for the same price, Black and Tan. I liked it but my wife said why? She can't live without massage and ventilated seats and the kids love the long wheel base.

The 2006-> 4,2FSI (and also V6 engines) have serious issues with timing chain and tensioners (V8).

Almost certain the chain tensioner has been swapped at that mileage already OR needs repacing very shortly.

The job involves removing the engine (and often gearbox and front subframe ). At the dealer like a 10k job. 2-5k at smaller garages.

Seen tensioners go as low as 100000km/60tmls, some could last double. But don't count on your luck here.

Also intake manifold runner linkages go bad on these (a fewhundred bucks), and intake carbon cleaning needed on the FSI engines.

These problems don't apply to the W12. That's the reason i have this engine.

7 years ago, I decided on the 06 vs 07 because of the price difference. I'd preferred the non TB and backup camera over the 06, but $4000 I could be ok with 06 since backup camera can be retrofitted.
Anyhow, my 06 now has 132k and with original TB.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information. Much of what I have read says that the A8 4.2 FSI engines DO NOT have issues with the timing chain and guides because they were made with metal while the 4.2 FSI that was used on the S6 and A6 DO have issues with the timing chain and guides because the guides were made out of plastic. So....??? Why would Audi use metal guides on the engine used in the A8 chassis and not also on the S6 and A6???

wow. i guess the a8 really is a pretty rare sedan. when I had my 7 series, i would get like two dozen responses immediately on the forums!

Here is part list for A6 2007 4,2FSI timing chain BAT 246kW engine:

As you can see the the BVJ engines are identical (except power output), but the BAT has different setup.

Here is same parts list for Touareg 2006 BAR engine:

And same parts list as BVJ engines.

I have seen both timing chain engines fail the tensioner AND also timing BELT MPI V8 engines that the timing chain tensioner rails BETWEEN camshafts in the rear of the head fail. Same goes for 4cyl 2,0FSI/TFSI.

And as said, I have seen SEVERAL especially Q7 (2006-2008) with failed timing chains for sale on various sites.

These also have the BAR engine:

But of course, everything is possible, and much of these things going bad depends on how well the car has been serviced in means of frequent oil changes. Neglecting oil changes basically means your rails and chains WILL fail, but also a lot of city driving does the same.

If I have undestood right the A6 BAT engine with the different setup from all the others is the GOOD engine, but I may be corrected. Very rare to see a A8/A6 V8 fail, but have seen a few of those too with timing chain related codes.

Seems it's the same setup on that as the BAT engine, NOT A8/A6 BVJ.

But as said, have seen a few Q7 V8 FSI to be sold with failed chain also...

louis - wow....you’re seriously still on the original timing belt? All the ancillaries original too (water pump, stat, etc)? I changed mine recently around 114k (all genuine parts) and thought I was pushing my luck at that mileage . That said, everything I took off did look to be in good shape.

Nathan,
It's been a long time since I've heard from you. Your car's is still doing well I guess. My car is already paid for itself after 5 years and now it's the 6th LOL. A8L is the most reliable and lowest cost to drive if you don't mess it up. I truly trust Audi quality regardless of what people think. Yes, it's a California car, great weather, been garaged most of its life. Everything should last a long time. If it works, don't fix it LOL. I'm not a worry wart. Timing belt is made with kevlar which should last forever. I've replaced the rollers and TB related on my D2, they're great at 150k miles, therefore I'm not going to mess with them. Yes, when the water pump leaks, then I may replace them all. This car now is my experimental car for doing stuff to it LOL. I only drive 5k miles a year now since i have my e-Golf for commuting, it should last me a few more years. It's still the best car for comfort, drivability and safe over all. Drove my mom the other day, she complemented the car was so nice and new LOL, why would you want to change?
