Yes, direct replacement. Did it myself.

Thanks for your quick reply. I left my car 2007 A8 in the audi main dealer garage this morning to change the grill. Because, it got damaged by hitting a bird. So i desided to change it for a S8 grille. Later today to my supprice the garage called to say the S8 grille would not fit unless i changed the bumper to an S8 bumperas well.
So just wanted to see if anyone eles had the same problem, so my car is still without its grille

Sounds exactly like something an Audi shop would say. Take it to another place and have them do it. Itīs the same size, even the same design as we W12 one I have, only different painting (S8 is kind of flat grey/black where W12 is glossy IIRC), and the bumper is basically the same thing as well so thereīs no reason why they would not be a direct fit. The mechanic probably just looked in the computer and concluded some partnos were not consistent and instead of bothering looking into it decided to tell you itīs impossible.

Only thing that would cause a problem is if they ordered grill for the wrong options like PDC and ACC

Or if they insist on the non-fit story tell them to take it back and order the W12 one from the model year with the same look (some other years the W12 had chrome horizontal bars).
