Came here looking for a 4.2 noise on my D2, somehow got landed here and thought I'd finally create an account and make a post. While I don't own a D3, I figure I could add to this thread.

I was of the same opinion about LEDs and resistors until I came across these units, $130CAD/$90USD :/ shipped to my door in 2 days:

I also didnt like the idea of loose ballasts, or trying to fasten them, these have the ballast integrated into the rear of the light, plug and play, nothing to flop around:

3000k on the left against OEM:

Oh yes, this is in my B6S4, not my D2.

The output is the same if not better than HID. I had the car lined up with a friend who had 3000 HIDs, and these were voted brighter. He even had a larger lens, if thats something to consider.

The only con, is the depth of them, and you need to make sure you dont have a aux rad or something behind them.

Thought I'd share.

Why you don't think about some white/blue vision blub? I go normal blub philistine white vision and they looks great. No errors, no heating...

Why you don't think about some white/blue blub? I got Philips WhiteVision and they look great. Osram made good white bulbs too. No errors and no heat. And they are cheaper...

Thanks for sharing. I looked at those type of LEDs and I just don't trust their longevity. If i remember right, the fans usually go and then the bulbs. Hope yours last the 60K hours thought. Keep us informed.

There's plenty of fanless models, or if clearance behind is an issue, then flexible braided cable style heat sink versions also.

If there are LEDs that put out 3400 lumens with that flexible braided heat sink, that would be the ticket. Just from the tactical flashlight world, high lumens means high amounts of heat, obviously.

Yellow light works better in fog and bad weather then a white light. You can see father in the fog with them.

+1

I live in the Northwest... Plenty of fog and rain.
Yellow is very effective in foul weather.

I did 55W HID's at 3K temp, and they work great!
Mine weren't the simple H11 "bulb swap" (mine's an early model '05), but still easy enough DIY project.

And, yes, ballasts get really hot. That's kinda' their job
