For starters:
1. Clean around the console buttons. Stuck debris can cause the system to hang up and not get past that Audi splash screen. Don't use any solvents or liquids beyond a slightly damp cloth or with some rubbing alcohol/no residue type products to avoid damaging the electronic board underneath.
2. Have you tried the basic three button reset, per the MMI owners manual? Try that after any necessary button area clean up.
After that, start looking for a failed component on the optical ring, or a broken ring.

thanks looked into the buttons already and don't think thats it. each button seems to work and none stick.Which ever button you hit the MMi screen comes on then shuts off, by what I have read I am assuming it may be the main unit which I beleive is behind the glove box??
has anyone had luck replacing this without dealer involvement?

Have you scanned Optical Ring? If it is broken somewhere nothing would work. It also can be any of modules.
Replacing MMI Interfacebox is relatively simple. It is behind the glove box. If you have to do it I can give you detailed instructions.

I am having an issue with my MMI -- I had water come in from the sunroof and from reading other posts - I am pretty sure it is the control panel. I called Audi to get a part and they gave me 4E1919612J -- this seems to be the entire control head .. buttons/housing etc. Does anyone know if I can buy just the circuit board portion board try to just replace that? If so - Might you guys know the part number to that. THANKS
